SATURDAY AUTUMN 2, YEAR THREE • 3PM - 7PM • SUNNY

A staple among villagers, the Harvest Festival is a hard to miss event. In previous years, villagers would bring ingredients to the square, preparing and sharing a meal together. As time went on, the meal became smaller and smaller, eventually resulting in only the preparation and serving of the soup from the large pot in the center of the square. As the meal became smaller, the festival itself grew, with games and chit-chat taking the old places of the other courses.

Even with Westhaven beating down its doors, Ioana continues to celebrate the Harvest Festival, since it is a festival that gathers the villagers in the square to make something together. For Mayor Tobias, it is an example of what the villagers must to do to protect their homes from the city. If they work together, and stand united, Ioana will continue to live on.

SOUP POT
As per tradition, a large soup pot sits in the center of the square. Villagers are asked to bring some ingredients (whether home-grown or store-bought) to put into the soup pot. In the middle of the festival, once the soup has been stirred and cooked, a few volunteers will distribute the soup from the pot to all of the attending villagers. Hopefully it'll taste alright!

GAMES
Usually there are plenty of games for villagers to participate in, but due to the lack of funds from having to have a new soup pot commissioned (darn you, rust!), there are only two classics present - Corn Hole and Ring Toss. The Mayor managed to find a few boxes of cheap stuffed animals and wrinky t-shirts that say: "I Love Ioana" on the front, though no one has any idea where they came from.

Please note that these games are not being run by staff! Feel free to roleplay your characters playing them and if they're successful. Keep it fair, though! Don't take every prize!

Harvest Festival!
Festivals were great to bring the villagers together, and they could expect a few citizens from Westhaven, either because it was a festival or because they used to live in the valley. This year Ella was going to take Sam to the festival and the little cutie she has been taking care of, Kenzie, hopefully, Sam wouldn’t mind Ella bring the baby with her, they could play the games, perhaps even win a couple of stuffed animals for Kenzie and they could all share a meal from the pot.

Ella waited at the festival's grounds for Sam, with Kenzie, she had made some matching bracelets for the two, which had an elastic band attached to it, in case Kenzie decided to run off Ella knew exactly when it would be time to chase the little runner.

”So Kenzie, are you ready for the festival today? I’m going to try to get you the cutest stuffed animal. We just need for Ella’s special friend to show up.” Ella told Kenzie, who was on her arms.

Harvest Festival
Tim had spent some time trying to get Melody dressed, she was being hard, which wasn’t normal, she usually behaved well, but unfortunately, that day she couldn’t get her to wear anything, that’s when his mother showed up to save the day, she managed to get Tim’s daughter dressed in time to go to the festival.

The man took his daughter by the hand to the festival grounds. He moved to Ioana a few years ago, before Melody was born, but he barely knew anyone there, all he did was work and spend whatever free time he had with the girl.

”Daddy, I want a stuffed animal.” she said.
”Maybe later.” he said, it was better to take a look around the place before trying to win a stuffed animal.

Tim was lucky with Melody, aside from eventual tantrums a kid had, she behaved better than most kids he saw at the cafe. They both walked around the festival grounds, where Tim gave a bag of vegetables from his mother’s garden, before continuing his walk with Melody.

Declan was fond of most of Ioana's festivals, and the Harvest Festival was perhaps one of his favorites. What could beat coming together as a village to celebrate a good harvest and enjoy some good food? Provided no one added anything strange to the soup pot, of course. There had been times when Declan had gone home hungry after a few sips out of his bowl, but he always had a good time. And with the outbreak of fires this year, everyone could use a good time.

He'd hemmed and hawed over what to add to the soup for a good while before ultimately deciding on bringing rainbow carrots. He thought they'd add a good flavor and nice bit of color to the soup.

Once he arrived, he handed over the basket with a smile and a nod. "Thanks!" he told the attendant before tucking his hands into his pockets and wandering off. There wasn't a whole lot to do aside from play a couple games and wait for the soup to be done. His only wish was that there was more food aside from just the pot of soup. He hoped it would turn out well this year.

Despite the fact that they were both on edge from the arsonist's note, Sawyer and Finn decided to attend the Harvest Festival with Maddie. He had yet to call and check on how Rebecca and Cal were doing and the guilt was eating at him. He tried to blame it on the fact that he'd been recovering from his withdrawal symptoms and that he was stressed with the threatening note, but deep down he knew those weren't valid excuses at this point. He was mostly putting it off because he was scared of what the doctors would say. As they headed into town, he made a promise that he'd call within the next couple days.

Barring the Firefly Festival, Sawyer hadn't attended any festivals since the Yule Ball. He wasn't much of a festival type of man. He detested crowds and always found the food to be substandard. He was dismayed to find out that there would only be a large pot of soup at this particular festival. Who knew what type of things people would throw in?

He went mushroom hunting with Maddie the day before and found a bunch of chanterelles to bring. He let his niece hand them off before the three of them wandered over to the rather pitiful looking game section. He knelt down a little to get on his niece's level. "Do you want to play anything?"

Maddie looked at the two games available and shook her head after a moment. "No..." Instead she peeked around Sawyer at the two other girls who were there. One was young, no more than a toddler, but the other seemed to be about Maddie's age. She hoped that the other girl would see her. She missed her friends from school and it'd been a while since she talked to a girl her own age.

Teddy hadn't attended a festival since the Spring Fling, and he hadn't really planned on going to this one, but free food was free food and he needed all of the free food he could get since the bar would be closing up soon. He didn't make enough money with his psychic business so he'd be saving up all the canned food he could until then.

Well, except the can of corn he handed over to the soup attendant. He gave it a longing look as he reluctantly let go of it. "Goodbye, corn," he said softly, resulting in an odd look from the attendant. "What? You don't like corn?" he asked, giving them a sneering look back before heading off into the crowd. This goddess-damned soup had better be worth it.

Cyrus wasn't particularly fond of the Harvest Festival. He didn't trust others enough to make an enjoyable soup. Still, it was nice to get out of the house and interact with folks outside the shop. He made sure to eat before hand and brought a basket of heirloom tomatoes to add to the pot. Even if he didn't partake, at least it was a good way to get rid of extra produce. He didn't have plans to stay long, but perhaps he'd stick around to at least see how the soup turned out this year.

Since he'd finished Jonas's house at the end of summer, Henry had been looking for a place of his own. He thought about renting some equipment to finish cleaning up the mess of the land his old house and workshop had stood on, but he wanted a fresh start. It wasn't like there was a lack of houses to move into, but he was unsure of whether he wanted to stay in Ashkeep or move into town. The only thing he was certain of was that he wanted to steer more towards woodcarving and away from carpentry.

He'd taken the day off from looking at houses to attend the Harvest Festival. He'd purchased a large bag of yellow onions after helping out at Emily's grocery store and chopped them up before heading into the square. Despite working there, he'd still been feeling like a burden on her lately and he would be relieved when he figured out exactly what he wanted. He handed the onions off and made his way over to a bench to people watch.

Rom hadn't been able to attend last year's Harvest Festival, and while she heard rumors that it wasn't going to be quite as exciting as it had been in the past, she was still glad to be able to attend. She ironed out a dress, picked out some navy blue flats to match, and grabbed a few jars of green beans she had canned over the summer to bring.

She was also happy that Jude was coming with her, though she wasn't sure whether he would mingle with the rest of the crowd or stick with her. She was always a little worried about what he thought of her. He seemed distant and she wondered if he resented the fact that she couldn't pay him more. She tried to quiet her anxiety about it by reminding herself that he'd known what he was getting into, but she was still a little nervous when she was around him.

"I h-hope you'll like the festival!" she said as they walked into town, trying to break what she felt was an awkward silence. "I-I haven't been to this one yet." She felt the tips of her ears beginning to burn, wishing that she hadn't said anything in the first place.

Samuel D. Barker
SATURDAY AUTUMN TWO, YEAR THREE • ALL DAY • SUNNY
"Do whatever comes naturally to you, you know she just don't care"
[ TAG - Ella, Kenzie, open! ]

The Harvest Festival had been cancelled last year and Samuel had been sad. It was one of his favourite festivals. Who didn’t just love free food, especially when it was shared among everyone! Samuel was pleased that the festival was running again this year, seemingly without modification or cutbacks given the town budget was strained trying to mitigate all the damage done by the fires.

He’d arranged to meet up with his girlfriend, Ella, the day prior. She’d mentioned something about bringing along a child she regularly looked after as the father was at work. Samuel had no problem with that. He loved hanging out with kids! Kenzie and him regularly sat down to draw cats and play with toy instruments. He was surprised to see his niece with Ella when he arrived at the festival grounds, however.

“Hi, Kenzie!”
Samuel said cheerily, picking up his niece and bouncing her on his hip. “What’re you doing ‘ere, ey?” He looked at Ella as he spoke, extending a smile her way. “Kenzie’s my niece,” he explained.

“Is she who you’re babysittin’ today?”
he asked, putting two and two together. Misha hadn’t let him know that he was busy today and needed a sitter for Kenzie. In fact, Samuel couldn’t remember the last time he’d been asked to look after Kenzie. He was mildly jealous of Ella if what he’d deduced was true. Samuel wished Misha would trust him that much. He could be a responsible adult too!

Even though they had been living under the same roof for the past few seasons, he still knew very little about his housemate Rom. She had been kind enough to board him, in exchange for some help around her farm. Nothing too difficult, especially since Jude was a man who liked to work, and loved to get his hands dirty. He enjoyed seeing the progress they made together, even if it didn't involve much talking. So it had probably been a shock to her when he asked if she'd be going to 'that festival in town'. He didn't know too much about it. Just that he had to bring something edible to add to the pot, and that was about it. In one arm he held a brown sack against his chest. Inside were a few potatoes for the soup. Something simple and filling as his contribution.

Jude looked around cautiously, unsure of what else there was to do. Heck, he wasn't even sure if he could eat the soup at the end of all this. Just in case someone sneakily threw some meat inside. It's not like anyone knew, or cared that he was a vegetarian. In fact no one really knew him at all. Not even Rom. But even so, she was somehow his closest friend in this valley.

When she spoke to him, he turned his body to shyly to face her. His grip on the vegetables he carried tightened and his heart rate increased. She had that effect on him. "Uh... yeah. Looks nice." Though it didn't really, it looked a little dreary to be honest. But he didn't want to be a downer, because this was her town and he wasn't about to insult it. It was just that where he came from, these sort of Festivals were large, and extravagant. There was always a lot to do, and so much great food to eat. His family usually had a booth where they sold ice cream and other dairy items, and he usually manned the register while his more outgoing siblings scooped fall themed flavors onto cones and chatted up the customers.

He'd never been very talkative, but he wanted to get to know the woman he was living with instead of just admiring her in silence. "Rom, do you want to play something with me? You don't have to if you've got friends here, I'll just...", he was so unsure of himself, and his tone didn't hide it. "...find something to do."

Finnley hadn't been too sure they'd be able to make the Harvest Festival. But Maddie's Birthday had been just the day before, and while Finn and Sawyer had put together a small party for her at the Cafe, Finn wondered if it would be worth showing her the atmosphere of local festivals today. After all as a child Finnley had actually quite enjoyed the festivals, Particularly the harvest festival, because while it was nothing Fancy, it brought the villagers together. Though since her father had taken on the tradition of trying the soup first every year before her when she was a child, she decided it would be the best to do the same.

So while Sawyer had taken Maddie out to collect some mushrooms, Finn had managed to bring along some of the corn they had harvested earlier that summer to put into the soup. There was really no telling what people would actually put in, and if the soup would actually taste good, but sometimes that was half the fun of it all. Or half the disaster. She handed the food over to the attendants as Sawyer did with his mushrooms, before stopping by the games long enough for Sawyer to ask Maddie if she wanted to play any.

"Y'know I've always been terrible at Cornhole." She said. "never won a prize from that game a day in m'life." And that was true, though she remembered one of the game masters giving her a stuffed animal out of pity one year when she was really young, she didn't really count that. Maddie didn't seem to want to play, but Finn followed her gaze, however shy it was, and found what she was looking at.

She nudged Sawyer softly in order to go undetected by Maddie, nodding in the direction his niece was looking in case he hadn't already noticed. "Tim, Melody!" she called, waiting for Sawyer to follow with Maddie before she headed over. "Great day for Mystery Soup ain't it?" she asked with a stretch to the man who in the cafe was one of her trusted waiters. She smiled at Melody, she was sure after the fiasco two years ago it was safe to say he'd be trying the soup for her first, too. Or maybe that was why they had attendants this year. "I'm real' glad they decided to bring it back this year. It just ain't fall in Ioana without the giant soup pot..." she glanced back at the newer pot. "Though I'm kinda glad they invested in a new pot this year." She cleared her throat, noticing she had gotten off track.

"Anyway, Tim this is Sawyer, and this here's Maddie." she said, skirting a little as she wasn't quite sure what to introduce Sawyer as, so she slid past the topic instead. "And Saywer and Maddie, this is Tim, he works for me at t'cafe. And this is his daughter Melody."

"Rusty, it's not going to cook any faster if you stare at it." Hayden handed her green onions over to the attendants for the soup, holding Eugene's hand with her free one. Rusty was perched in front of the pot, staring at it with a slightly wagging tail. Hayden knew how much the dog loved this festival, they had gone every year it was on since they got here, and she knew that the big pot meant she'd be getting food eventually. She was both the stupidest and the smartest dog that Hayden had ever encountered, and she had mixed feelings about calling her hers.

"So anyway, welcome to the Harvest Festival." she said to Eugene, it being his first considering they were forced to cancel last year. "I know it isn't one of those fancy Whitmont parties, but we have soup. As for if it's any good I don't know if I'll be able to answer that question, even after I taste it." She admitted, though it sounded like a joke, Eugene would probably be able to tell she was being serious.

"Penny said we had to downgrade of the games in order to get a new pot too, something about lead poisoning if we continued using the old one. You know Penny, always sweating the little things." she said, waving her free hand dismissively before glancing back at Rusty. "Seriously, Rust." she whistled and the dog's ears perked up. The Husky finally took pity of the poor pot and started to trail after her two favorite humans. "Even if it's not fancy, you've got to admit it's got some kind of charm, right?" she asked Eugene as they walked away from the pot with Rusty in tow.

"Nylah slow down!" Theo called to the dog as they both trailed just after Ender. It had been two whole seasons since Cassidy had revealed to Ender that her son was actually their son, and as silly as it sounded, Cassie was still trying to get used to co-parenting. While she didn't consider them bad at it, there were still a few kinks and contradictions between her house and his that she would need to work out. But today they decided it sounded like fun to bring Theodore to Ioana for the Harvest Festival, and Cassie was actually glad to get out of the city for a little bit with her mind being cloudy as of late.

"Woah! Mom, dad, look at the size of that pot!" Theodore said excitedly as he pushed between his parents to get a good look at it. "It's like that one story that they told us in school last year...Hansel and Gretel." Cassie pursed her lips in thought for a moment as she stood beside Ender. "No Theo honey, I think you mean The story of the Hidden Chalice. That had a giant pot, Hansel and Gretel was the oven."

"They burrrrrneeeeed the witch!" he cried cheerfully. While Theo was looking around excitedly, Cassie gently nudged Ender with her shoulder. "I maintain that he gets that from you." There was a lot to be said about Theo's excitability, but he had a love for things she hoped that most young boys had a love for, including stories that involved fire. While she thought Hansel and Gretel would have scared him, it did quite the opposite.

"Dad, have you been to this before? What do we do? And why am I holding these turnips?" he asked, shaking the small bundle of vegetables in front of his father.

SATURDAY AUTUMN TWO, YEAR THREE • ALL DAY • SUNNY
"I noticed you, you stood out like a sore thumb, the most beautiful sore thumb I'd ever seen"
[ TAG - Hayden, open! ]

Wherever Hayden went, Eugene went to. Grocery store for onions? Eugene followed. Vet because Rusty had yet again swallowed something she shouldn’t have? Eugene tailed along. To Town Hall to begin her shift? OK, Eugene had a genuine reason for following given he worked there too. The point was, Eugene was much more frequent around town because he’d hold Hayden’s hand and shyly follow her into the streets.

Here they were today at the Harvest Festival. Instinctively Eugene wrinkled his nose up at the shoddy decorations but he was quick to smoothen out his facial features again. He’d gotten used to the quaintness of Ioana festivals now and knew they were actually a lot nicer than they appeared. Still, he indicated his mild demur at being present when Hayden welcomed him there.

“Definitely not a Whitmont party…”
Eugene mumbled, remembering glamorous scenes from the ones he used to attend. He’d never had such an amazing girl on his arm at those, though, so Eugene was automatically in favour of attending as many near-derelict festivals with Hayden as she wanted to go to. He did, however, exhibit genuine opposition to being present when Hayden mentioned a health hazard pot. “Lead poisoning? Wait, are you joking? Hayden, please tell me you are joking.”

Oh Goddess. This had been her plan all along, hadn't it? To slowly blur the line between sarcasm and seriousness in order to trick him into eating out of a lead-leaking pot. Well, that was fine because Eugene simply wasn’t going to eat anything at this festival at all. He didn’t mind. The soup and its stale brown colour had looked particularly unappetising anyway.

“If we completely redefined the definition of charm in the Oxford Dictionary then perhaps – and only then perhaps – could this festival maybe be considered vaguely charming,”
he replied. Eugene looked down at Rusty. The mutt’s ears were perked, her tail wagging and her tongue out as she grinned up at him. Eugene couldn’t help but smile back at the dumb dog’s face. “Rusty likes it at least.”

Kenzie was excited to be out with Lala today. They always went on fun adventures and she wondered what adventure they would be on today. Her daddy had dressed her in a white t-shirt and yellow overalls, so maybe they would be playing cowgirls today.

Once she was with Lala, there was mention of a festival and she clapped her hands excitedly. “Wan’ eddy,” she said, looking around the festival when someone special caught her eye.

“Me! Me!” she said happily jumping into her uncle’s arm. She gave him a snuggle. “Gon’ get a eddy tday!”

Melody held her father’s hand tight not to get lost. As they both walked around the festival Melody kept trying to get her father to go to the games so that he could win her a stuffed animal, but somehow it was all in vain, the little girl was unable to change her father’s direction.

Tim was doing it on purpose, Melody shouldn’t have everything she wanted, he tried his best to teach her that and thank goddess his mother wasn’t there or they would be tossing rings until they got Melody a doll.

When Tim heard a familiar voice, he turned, Melody let go of his hand and ran to Finn. The girl knew his father’s boss, she owned a café full of cats, she loved to visit. Tim approached Finn, meeting her halfway. ”Hey. I hope so, two years ago didn’t end too well.” he commented. Melody looked up and then at the other girl that seemed to be roughly her age.

”I’ve only been here for a few years, but without this festival and that pot it’s like something is missing.” he agreed with her and when she introduced Sawyer and his niece he smiled. ”It’s nice to meet you Sawyer, and you too Maddie.” he said holding out his hand for Sawyer while the other waved at Maddie.

Melody, on the other hand, stood there for a while and decided that she wasn’t going to let Finn introduce her. ”Hello. I’m Melody! Nice to meet you.” the child said with a slight proud look on her face.

Harvest Festival!
This year Max’s grandparents were unable to attend the festival, unfortunately for Max, it was a tradition always taking something to put on the pot, this year she would be going alone. She carried a bag with some carrots and some cabbages and gave it to whoever was taking the ingredients.

Now it was time to go home.

Max, quietly walked away from a crowd of people, always trying not to be seen by those that came into the shop regularly, however, in her attempt not to be seen by people, to avoid conversation, always looking back, making sure they haven’t seen her, Max walked straight into a bench, stepping the foot of whoever was sitting down. She looked forward only to see someone sitting there, he was vaguely familiar but quite was intimidating.

The redhead’s eyes got wider as she looked at the man. ”I…I….” She began but the words didn’t come out, suddenly her anxiety kicked in and she just stood there saying the same thing over and over again, while the thought of dying crossed through her mind several times.

Kenzie was incredibly excited to be at the festival today. She hugged Samuel as tight as she could with her baby arms, begging for a teddy.

“We'll get you a teddy, Kenzie!”
Samuel promised. After all, that was why those stalls with the colourful displays of different stuffed animals were there – to entice the young ones into getting their parents and relatives into wasting their money trying to win one.

Samuel was surprised to find out that Misha and Ella knew each other. Both had referenced each other with regards to the babysitting arrangement they had sorted, but neither had ever given Samuel clue as to their relationship.

“It really is tiny,”
he mumbled in agreement, wondering how this revelation had completely eluded him when there’d always been a correlation between Misha working and Ella babysitting.

They walked to the game area together, Samuel still carrying Kenzie and briefly chatting to her. In baby language, his words were probably equivalent to a meaningful conversation, but to any nearby listening adults it just sounded like a whole load of gibberish.

“I’ve been bestest best friends with Misha for ages,”
Samuel explained as he stood next to Ella at one of the games stalls, watching her as she tried to win a toy for Kenzie. “I think three-ish years now, maybe? Summin’ like that, anyway. I had no idea you guys knew each other though, that’s awesome! We should all hang out sometime!”

Kenzie was hanging out with two of her favorite people today. This day couldn’t be better! Maybe Lala could tell her and Uncle Me more stories about the mermaids and fairies. She had yet to see a mermaid of fairy, but she was sure her and Lala could find one somewhere.

Uncle Me carried her over to the games and they looked like a lot of fun. She watched Lala as she played the game and Kenzie wriggled in her uncle’s arms to try and get down. “Wanna play!” she said, doing her best to slide out of her uncle’s grasp. “Me turn!”

Sawyer looked up at Finn when she nudged him, then in the direction she gestured towards. A man was standing there with a girl about Maddie's age, and judging by Finn calling out to them, they seemed to be people Finn knew. He stood, taking Maddie's hand gently as they trailed behind her. He stood awkwardly to the side and a little bit behind her as she spoke. Outside of Finn, the parents, and the innkeeper, he didn't really know anyone in the village.

After a bit of small talk, Finn introduced them. Sawyer took Tim's hand, giving it a nice, firm shake, trying not to let on just how nervous he was. He wasn't used to chatting with people, and especially wasn't used to being introduced to people. Was this how his life was going to be from now on? Actually trying to be nice to people and mingle? "Nice to meet you, too," he told Tim, hoping he was doing this whole pleasantries thing correctly.

Maddie gripped Sawyer's hand a little tighter as introductions were being made. "Hi," she said quietly. Now that she was finally talking to someone her own age, she wasn't quite sure what to do. Back at home, she had easily made friends through school or daycare. This was all new to her, though, and she didn't exactly have anything to play with or share. She looked up at her uncle, a pleading look in her eyes. He looked back down at her, trying to keep the fear out of his own.

He cleared his throat and looked back to Tim and Melody. "So, uh... Tim? Do you think Melody would like to play a game or something with Maddie?" He tried to smile but it ended up looking more like a grimace.

Henry was caught up in his own thoughts, wondering perhaps if he should take a vacation to help clear his head before settling on a home, when someone stepped on his foot. It wasn't painful, but it wasn't like there was a very large crowd for someone to end up bumping into people like that. He stood up, taking in the person who had stepped on him. She was a small red-headed woman who was a little more than a foot smaller than her. When she started stuttering and repeating herself, he did his best to wipe the annoyed look off his face and sat back down, well aware that his general largeness could be somewhat intimidating.

"Hey there," he said, unsure of exactly what to say. "If you're trying to apologize, don't worry about it. I'm a pretty sturdy guy," he said, cracking a smile. "Maybe just watch where you're going next time?"

Rom wasn't sure if it was just her anxiety affecting her, but Jude's reply about the festival seemed a little... forced. And honestly, as she looked around, she really couldn't blame him. There was no food aside from the big pot of soup everyone was adding ingredients to, and there were only a couple of games. "Yeah... Nice..." she responded, heat now spreading to her cheeks. Well, at least the other festivals she'd been to had been a little bit more grand, so at least she could look forward to showing him those. Provided he even stuck around.

She crossed her arms as she took in the festival, feeling more than a little awkward from the combination of trying to make small talk and feeling like she had somehow let Jude down even more. She wouldn't be surprised if he said he wanted to move out by the end of the week. She was surprised, however, when he asked if she wanted to play a game with him.

Rom turned to him, arms still crossed. She'd seen Sam, but he'd been busy with someone. Misha wasn't here as far as she knew. Outside of those two, she hadn't interacted with very many other villagers. That aside, the fact that Jude seemed to want to speak with her meant that she would rather stick with him on the chance that it might ease some of her tension regarding their relationship.

Her body relaxed slightly and she gave a small smile. "Sure!" She looked over at the two games available. "I don't think I've ever played that game," she said, gesturing towards the two boards with holes in them.

“Wait a second, isn’t that the story where the mean, old witch eats the children? We better hope there’s no witches here, she might put you in that pot kiddo.” Ender smirked then ruffled Theo’s hair. He watched for a second as he seemed to try and process what he’d just heard. Theo didn’t seem afraid, just curious. He was a naturally inquisitive boy. Something he definitely got from his mother. After that he was quick to move onto the next thing.

“The turnips are for the soup you goof. Hopefully it fills the witches tummy, right Cas?” Ender used his elbow to softly nudge her, a gesture they seemed to share often. A routine part of their co-parenting was joking around with one another as well as their son. It definitely helped at times whenever Theo decided to get all philosophical on them. There were some question even they could not answer, and he knew that somewhat disappointed his son. But Ender couldn’t predict the future, and he couldn’t read Cassie’s mind either, even though there were a lot of times he wished he could.

When Theodore asked what else there was to do, Ender was going to mention the few games they could play together, but his eyes quickly caught a glimpse of a few other kids playing in the square. “You wanna go hang with the kids bud? Or do you wanna play something with mom and I?”

Ender didn’t mind which one he picked, he was just happy to be spending some time with the two people, and one canine, he cared for most.

“Oh. Uhhh… ya’mean corn hole?” That name had always felt a little weird and dirty to say out loud, and now he felt like a whore in church saying it to Rom. His cheeks burned red, but he somehow managed to continue the conversation even though he was completely mortified. “I could show you… if ya’want. I’ve played it before, it’s just the same as bean bag toss.” With that he started to walk over to the playing area. He bent over to pick up the bean bags and showed both colors off to her.

“Ladies first I always say, pick a color.”, he said holding both choices up. He swallowed hard and tried not to look at her too much. He didn’t want to be creepy, but he also didn’t want to be rude. He probably seemed like a psychopath who was raised by wolves by the way he was acting now, and had been acting since he’d arrived. But honestly he was just nervous, and he’d never stood this close to her before.

“Now we each gotta stand by a target, and the goal is to get the bean bag in each other’s hole here.”, he pointed downwards to show her on the board. “Each time ya get it in, that’s a point. You can go first.”

The only party in the rich bitch part of town that Hayden could remember ever being at was the last one she could remember being thrown by Charles Triston, and she wouldn’t recount the raunchy things that she had done with his son that night, as she imagined it wasn’t something that you should in fact recount to your current boyfriend.

That was in fact probably a better plan, so she’d stick to it, instead nodding when he said it wasn’t your typical Whitmont Party. “Yeah we lack enough stuffy rich people to make up the difference.” She explained as the continued walking through the festival grounds. “Even if it’s not always the fanciest I always appreciate the fact that Penny busts her ass on these types of things every year.” Of course she also knew it mattered a lot less to Eugene what Penny did or didn’t do as it mattered to her, the Secretary worked hard to cover for all the shortcomings of their current mayor.

“I mean…” she started when he asked if she was joking about the lead poisoning. “I could lie and say no, but yeah.” She said after a moment. “That is, if we were using the old pot, that thing was a staple for a long time, but I wouldn’t worry about it now. Penny fought with the committee until they let the old thing go due to health concerns, which is honestly probably the best thing for you know, everyone.” She answered. “What’s with the look on your face? It’s like you’ve seen a Ghost. Not the right holiday yet babe.” She said as she walked ahead of him, while Rusty brought up the rear.

“I think we could do that. Have you ever read the dictionary? I think it would be cool if we changed the definition of stuff. We could change the definition of everything, and make them funnier, make up words, that would make it more interesting.” Of course her dog always seemed to hit the right soft spot of Eugene, sitting there with a large, goofy almost grin. “She likes any Festival where she has the possibility of grabbing a snack. In a way she is my Spirit animal.” She said, stopping to turn to Eugene and wrapping her arms around his middle.

“But try to have a little fun, will you? If you’re going to make fun of our cornhole game you could at least play it and then start complaining.” She said, leaning up to place a quick peck on his cheek. “And eventually, hopefully, the soup will be ready. Without the lead poisoning.” She promised.

Finn wrinkled her nose slightly when he mentioned two years ago. That mess had not been Ioana’s proudest moment but this year they had a chance to redeem themselves by keeping a responsible eye on the soup. She chuckled however. “Yeah. Mayor Toby seems t’have it on lock this year though. They ain’t lettin’ no one add anythin’ if they aren’t lookin’.” She mentioned.

She glanced at Sawyer briefly, smiling at him in a way that would tell him she’s recount the tale if Tim didn’t once the kids weren’t around, considering it wasn’t exactly the tale for kids. Instead she nodded at Tim’s words. “That’s jus’ the sweet smell of tradition, Tim.” She added with a shrug.

She stood to the side as Sawyer and Tim engaged in conversation. This was the first time Finn had really seen Sawyer talk to the other villagers, but they hadn’t been together quite as often before so maybe it was just because she bad never seen it.

She slipped her arm into Sawyer’s when she noticed he seemed to be floundering just a bit, but it seemed she wouldn’t need to when a little boy came tumbling just in front of the two girls with a stuffed Hedgehog in hand.

Theodore listened intently as his father said he hoped there were no witches around, and then grinned as his mother handed Pudge to him. The stuffed and overloved Hedgehog was all he needed to have an adventure, usually.

“If she does it I’m gonna push her into an oven! But first Nylah will help me get out of the soup, won’t you girl?” He asked, patting the dog just between the ears.

She zoned back into the conversation when Ender mentioned her name. She bit her lip. “Ender!” She chided, though she couldn’t hide the slight chuckle in her voice. “Don’t you go putting ideas in his head. The goddess knows he has enough in there already.” She said, Theodore grinning like a tiny fox. “No witch is a match for me!” He assured both his parents.

When his father pointed it out, Theo looked over at the two girls standing between a few adults. “I want to go over there!” He said, darting off with Pudge in hand.

“Theo wait!” Cassie called after him, he wandered off often and she was fearful of losing him in the crowds. She turned to Ender, frowning softly. “Ender, there’s been a lot of trouble around here lately, I’ve heard in the news. We got to keep an eye on him.” She didn’t know what she would do if something happened to Theodore.

But finally she went after him with Ender. “I’m Theo! Do you guys wanna play with me and Pudge?” He was just asking, holding up his hedgehog. Cassie drew in a breath. “I’m sorry, he knows better than to just get in the middle of—“ before she could finished, the young blonde woman waved her off. “Ah he ain’t causin’ no trouble is he boys?” She asked, clearly referring to the men next to her.

Theo grinned and turned back to his father. “My dad can be the evil wizard who captured Pudge, and we can be the brave heroes that have to rescue him!” He said to both Maddie and Melody. He looked up at Ender after a moment. “Would you do that dad?” He asked eagerly. Cassie glanced at the others, then at Ender. “It’s up to you, Evil Wizard.” She said, though she kind of hoped he would play along because it meant he could watch Theo more easily if he was actively following him.

Harvest Festival!
Ella watched Sam and Kenzie, who would have thought that Sam and Misha were friends, honestly, it had been her fault to assume that would be another man in the village that loved glitter, it would be impossible, but Ella didn’t even consider that they could be the same person.

”That means, we can watch over Kenzie together!” she said excitedly about the whole situation. She imagined what Sam and she could do, they then could play with Kenzie and have fun.

Sam proceeded to explain that Misha was his best friend, well she could only imagine, seeing that Sam was Kenzie’s uncle. ”I met Misha a while ago, maybe a year or so ago, I got into the clinic after a fight, then I was a bit more regular, my scooter broke so no more trips to the city…I hope it gets fixed soon,” she commented as they arrived at the games.

Ella paid for her rings and began tossing them at the bottles, initially she missed but she was sure the last was going to be an actual prize, luckily she was able to hit the bottle, but the prize wasn’t what she expected. ”Unfortunately I couldn’t get you the teddy bear, but I did get this neat keychain.” Ella said pointing at the dolphin like a keychain.

Kenzie then wanted to play, Ella paid for the baby’s rings and handed them to Sam. ”Here you go.” she said watching them play, maybe Kenzie could win herself a teddy bear with the help of her uncle.

NOTES

Harvest Festival
Tim felt a bit awkward introducing himself and being introduced, but whoever Sawyer was, he didn’t seem like a bad person, after all, he was with Finn and Tim always thought Finn was the type of person to have a good judge of character. The thought of someone pouring something on the pot like two years ago didn’t sound fun. ”That’s a funny store…” he said in a low voice to prevent the children from hearing.

Unlike the adults, and the other girl Melody was eager to play with her new friend, she didn’t know that many people her age and adults were complicated. She watched Maddie and then looked up at her father, hoping that he could somewhat convince the girl to play with her.

When Sawyer spoke Tim smiled. ”I’m sure Melody would love to play with Maddie. Right Melody?” he asked her daughter, who instantly smiled when asked that question.

”Yes! I want to play with Maddie!” Melody said, but soon someone else showed up, that had to be her lucky day, so many people to play with. ”Hi! I’m Melody.” she said with a cheery smile. Tim turned to see the new addition to the group, not that he minded people but it was getting a bit too crowded.

Melody, however, looked both excited and curious about the whole game. ”So we get to be the knights?!” Melody asked Theo. ”DADDY! I get to be a knight!” she spoke pulling her father’s hand.

When he spoke, Max calmed down a bit, he didn’t seem as intimidating as before.

”I’m sorry.” Max finally spoke. She had to learn that her poor reaction to meeting new people was something in her mind, but the thought of people not liking her or thinking she was weird was enough to make her lose control.

”I didn’t mean to bump into you, I was just trying to avoid people that know my grandmother.” she admitted with a closed fist, still trying to get a hold of her own emotions, but when he smiled she couldn’t help but smile as well. ”I will try, can’t promise though…” she said a bit more relax.

”My name is Maxine Smith.” she said, deciding to introduce herself.
