[SUNDAY SUMMER 26TH, YEAR THREE • EVENING • CLEAR]

The Firefly Festival is one that has been around since the founding of the valley. Lanterns would be placed in the river near Nivalis Lake to represent the souls of those who had passed in the valley, usually by the loved ones of the deceased. However, others soon began to see the festival in a more romantic perspective. They saw it as a time to stop and appreciate the people they had in their lives, whether it be their partner or close friends. Eventually the festival was celebrated town-wide, with the whole community gathering by the river to participate.

With the town’s decline, the Firefly Festival began to be celebrated individually. Those remembering lost loved one would gather by the river to reminisce and say their goodbyes to the recently departed, and couple went to picnic in the meadows, stargazing and enjoying the company of one another.

With the continued success of the festival, Ioana is continuing to bring the community together for a traditional Firefly Festival. By the lake, booths have been set up handing out lanterns to be lighted and released, as well as food and drink if someone opted out of bringing a picnic basket. Couples and families settle into the grassy area by the lake or along the river, enjoying time with one another to remember those lost in the last year, or to celebrate shared love.

He still wasn't in the best condition.

Over the past few days Sawyer had had some time to rest and a chance to recover from his Withdrawal symptoms, but he still wasn't at his best, the doctor said that would take some time. Still, Finn felt a little nervous about going to Firefly alone this year with everything going on. So she had asked if he would come with her, and upon him agreeing she had suggested that maybe he should take a nap first.

What she hadn't really expected was how tired she had been, and while laying there she had also fallen asleep, Maddie downstairs with her mother who had offered to make cookies with the young girl whole Finn took care of Sawyer. It hadn't taken her long to close her eyes and fall asleep, and the nap wasn't so long, but when she opened her eyes she found she had curled closer to Sawyer in her sleep, feeling the warmth of his body as she slowly roused herself awake. She moved back slightly, glancing at the time and gently tapping Sawyer on the shoulder.

"Come on, it's round' time." she said as she sat up, her cheeks still burning slightly. She was still as confused as she was the day that he had shown up. She still wanted to be upset with him, but it was so hard for her to be. Somehow, she knew he was sorry for what he had said. But how was she supposed to know what he would do when Maddie was gone? She didn't know if she was all that was tying them together. But she also remembered the kiss he had given her the day he returned. There was something behind that, and it was something she hoped would still be there if and when Maddie returned home.

As they walked underneath the Festival's banner, she took his hand quietly, purchasing a light purple lantern from the front area. "I gotta' do this every year for my Grandad." she explained, looking up at Sawyer. "My Gran' said he pissed off the bull, but sometimes I ain't sure if by the bull she was refferin' to erself'." she said, a slight doubt in her voice. Her Grandma had always been a little batty, into Voodoo and the like, and according to her father there had been suspicion that her Grandpa had been cheating on her. True or not, Finn wasn't sure, but she had always liked her Grandfather, so it felt right to come and honor him each year.

"I don't really know why they count this festival as a good place t'take a date though. Apparently has somethin' t'do with the committee findin' somethin' poetic bout' death spawnin' new relationships or somethin' like that. I just always thought it was weird." Maybe it was just how the river looked with the lanterns floating down it, and how people felt both a sense of loss and love, but she still never really got it. But her concern shifted to Sawyer after a moment. "How y'feeling after the hike down here?" she asked.

It made sense that Oliver and Scout would attend this year’s Firefly festival. They both had lost their father due to cardiac arrest, and last year’s festival had been a significant stepping stone in their relationship. Even though Oliver may have been an ass in the days following the festival, the truths they shared with each other that night paved the way for them to be together.

It was still odd to think that almost a year had passed since Oliver officially dropped his bachelor status for the title of boyfriend. Anyone who knew Oliver knew that he wasn’t a one girl kind of guy, but something about Scout had changed that, and he was truly happy with her. Sure, he screwed up a few times, and managed to get under her skin and make her angry, but things worked out in the end.

They arrived at the festival, each grabbing their lantern before finding a spot to wait for the official lighting. “So which textbook did you bring this year?” he teased.

Misha hadn’t been to the Firefly Festival before, but this year he had someone to mourn; Kenzie’s mother.

Kenzie would never know her mother, not really. She would only ever know what others told her about her. Misha hadn’t really wanted to talk about Marissa for the first year after her passing, but now that Kenzie was starting to understand more about the world around her, she would no doubt wonder about her mother soon enough. He had started talking about Marissa in bedtime stories to Kenzie. Stories about Misha and Marissa’s life before Kenzie was born.

At the festival, Misha and Kenzie could honor Marissa’s memory. He grabbed a lantern and carried it and Kenzie over to a spot near the lake. It was later than Kenzie was use to being out, so she stay curled in her daddy’s lap, watching the water of the lake.

Firefly Festival
Eleanor wasn’t sure if she should go to the festival, she hadn’t lost anyone in particular, not the way most people do, but she did lose a part of her life and many people along the way, one of them who she cared deeply for.

Ignoring her thoughts about how ridiculous it would be to get a lantern for someone who is still alive, even if gone forever from her life, Eleanor got dressed, made a couple of sandwiches and walked to the lake.

At one of the booths she got two lanterns and walked over to the lake, carefully, she sat on the edge, removed her footwear and stuck her feet on the water as she lighted the lanterns. One for everyone she knew and lost over the years and one for herself, the brief life of destructive Eleanor was finally behind her back, still a loss.

As she watched her lanterns be taken away by the smooth current of the lake, she turned to the side only to see Misha and Kenzie, the little girl seemed to bit tired. ”Hello.” she said loud enough for Misha to hear

Firefly Festival Year 03
Fiona prepared a picnic basket with food for her and Jackson, she wasn’t sure if Jazmyn was going to come along, but regardless she packed some extra food in case she did. The blonde didn’t forget some dog snacks for Inky and Lady.

She left her house along with Lady by the leash, who was happy to go out for a walk. Arriving at the lake she walked around, bought a lantern and took around walk around the place. Some people were enjoying themselves, eating and laughing, spending some time with their loved one, while others seemed a bit gloomy and sad; she looked at her lantern and smiled, her foster father deserved the world and would be unhappy if she didn’t smile.

Fiona stood near the lantern booth, waiting for Jackson, she was sure he was going to get one himself.

Firefly Festival Year 03
Another year visiting the lake during the firefly festival, despite of the time spent with his siblings, the festival wasn’t so bad, sure the little kids didn’t have to be there running around like savage animals on the loose, but it wasn’t like he could order them to stop.

Sally and Aaron were running around the lake, while Zeke’s mother was buying some lanterns for them to show respect for her father, it was then when Zeke was tired of watching his siblings running around, if they wanted to do mischief it has to be done in silence. Emily watched as her brother began to lose his mind, which an amused look on her face.

Zeke got up and walked around the lake area, maybe there would be something more amusing than to listen to his younger siblings making a fuss and his older sister thinking it’s amusing. As he walked around the lake he saw a familiar face, he wasn’t sure if he was going to find the other Badgers but he certainly didn’t expect to find that person here.

"Come sit by mama," Celeste cooed her two daughters as they toddled around the area with wide eyes. Celeste hadn't bothered putting them in any clothes, but had some pyjamas ready for them. They'd probably play on the ground and stain them.

Luna turned her gaze to her mother and pointed to the sky. "Star?" She asked curiously, hobbling over to Celeste and plonking her posterior on the ground heavily.
"Yes, Luna. Those are stars. It's a beautiful, clear night!"
"Night night?" Aria piped in, peering over towards them.
"Not yet." Celeste tapped beside her and watched her other child toddle over. Luckily, the pram was nearby if either of them decided to fall asleep.

"We're going to be watching some fireflies fly around."
"Fyfly?" The twins asked together, looking up at the stars once more.
One year old children seemed to be so curious and with their limited dictionary, Celeste just laughed softly and ran her fingers through their small and messy locks. "Yes, Firefly. I'll see if I can catch one for you and keep it in a jar. Then at night, he will light your room up and protect you from scary dreams."

Looking around, Celeste wasn't surprised by the lack of turnout. Luckily, it was quiet and that wouldn't distract her children as much - she could keep an eye on them too.
Peering around at some of the attendees, Celeste rolled her eyes at the sight of some of the people and blanked them almost instantly.

"Hey Aria, where is Luna?" Celeste tilted her head and feigned curiosity. Aria instantly pointed to Luna and her small fingers reached out to touch her sister's shoulder. Clapping to applaud her daughter, Celeste's attention turned to the other one.
"Luna where's your nose?" Luna instantly lifted her small, chubby hand and poked her nose; forming it into a snout. "You're both so smart!"

summer 26th • Finn, Tanuki

The worst of Sawyer's withdrawal symptoms had passed after the first day, though he kept to the Finn's bed or the bathroom most of the day after. Two days later, he still wasn't feeling back to his old self, but he moved about the house freely. Well, as freely as he could while trying to skirt around Finn's parents. He was ashamed of his past actions and he wasn't sure how her parents would react to him.

When Finn asked him to go with her to the Firefly Festival, he'd been a little unsure. It wasn't just because he was still feeling ill, but he wasn't sure about going out somewhere alone with her. After a few moments of thought, though, he relented. He was grateful for the suggestion for resting before hand. He wouldn't know how to thank her parents enough for watching Maddie.

After a short nap, Finn woke him up. He murmured incoherently and did his best to rouse himself out of his slumber. It was as if all the hours of sleep he'd been missing out on had hit him all at once, but he had told her he was going to go, and he didn't want to do anything to disappoint her.

His face was sallow under the festival's lights, lanterns highlighting just how deep the shadows underneath his eyes were. He glanced down at their hands for a moment as she took his but remained silent. He wasn't sure how to cope with the fact that she didn't hate him, but he was grateful for it. Sawyer nodded slightly as she explained why she came. He thought about buying a lantern for his parents, but ultimately decided against it. He wanted to feel guilty, but his time for mourning had passed. He was just happy he wasn't buying one for his brother. Perhaps he'd be able to call Laura and inquire about them soon...

Sawyer's eyebrows knitted together when she said people brought dates to the festival. Did she consider this a date? She said she thought it was weird, so perhaps not... Would they ever date? Or was this just another limbo state of their relationship that would come crashing down?

She asked him how he was feeling after the walk down to the lake. He cleared his throat, just now realizing how dry his lips and throat felt. "I'm... okay. Kind of thirsty." He glanced around, gaze falling on the stalls selling refreshments. "I could get us something to drink, if you'd like?"

Of course it was natural for Scout to be at the firefly festival this year. After all, when she had found out about the festival when she was nineteen, it seemed to make perfect sense for her to come here in order to honor her father. This was now her third year of going, but she felt more comfortable having Oliver at her side this year. Despite what had happened the year before, the first time she had given in to her needs, and her want for Oliver that had resulted in him having attempted to do what he did with about every other girl he had ever been with.

But honestly, Scout was just happy that it hadn’t ended up in the way it did with most girls that he had been with. Instead they had been in a relationship for almost a year now, and despite how mad he could make her, how much trouble she found him to be sometimes, she knew that she wanted no one else standing at her side. So what had happened in the days following the firefly festival didn’t matter, because she was happy with where they were now, and she would instead remember the festival as something that paved the way for them to be together, even through their shared grief of losing a father in similar manners.

She rolled her eyes softly as Oliver questioned her on which book she had brought along with her today. “The anatomy of a Starfish.” She mentioned as she held up the small leaflet book. Despite her finals coming up soon, tonight she had decided that a small book would do, as she wanted to spend more of the night focused on the man that she loved instead of some book in her hand. She stuck her tongue out at him teasingly before glancing over to her lantern. “What, you know me by now? Always have to have my nose in a book.” She said with a smile, placing the leaflet back in her bag, taking Oliver’s hand in hers. “But if you’d like,” she teased gently, “I’ll keep my eyes on you tonight instead.”

Belle

--

Jackson wasn’t usually someone who went to the firefly festival. Sure, he did have people to mourn, but he always felt a little uncomfortable knowing there were people there that had lost people in much more recent memory, that were grieving and wished that their loved ones would come back to them, some not even having the time to accept the fact that they were gone. But he supposed that placing a lantern in for his departed loved ones wouldn’t be such a bad idea, he hadn’t gone in a few years at that.

He had taken Jazmyn to meet Fiona at the Festival, Inky walking in between them as they made their way over, though almost as soon as they had gotten there, Jazmyn had scampered off to join some of the local kids with Inky close behind her. She had been with his parents much more often lately. Jackson was still as tired as he had been at the start of all this arsonist business, but fire by fire he was getting clumsier, he was slipping, and they were fire by fire, getting closer to closing in on him.

Though he knew Jaz was enjoying her new school in the city, he also knew that she missed her friends here in the valley, and so he let her be. Instead he found Fiona sitting by the bank. “Hey,” he greeted with a smile, leaning over to kiss her briefly. “Sorry I was a little late, we had problems getting Inky out the door. She’s up later and later at night lately.” He said as he sat down next to her.

Tecri

--

Finn hadn't really been to sure how to answer when her mother asked her how she had been coping so well with Sawyer coming back as he did. The whole situation had taken at least two days to fully explain to her mother, and it had been pretty hard for her fully to understand herself. But she knew two things, that Sawyer was here, and she didn't know if she could be sure for how long. But she wanted to make it last, however long he was here. Maybe she should have been more angry, and maybe if not for the way he had looked at her that night, she might have cast him out. But she found that she had missed his warmth next to her at night, and the way it seemed she fit so naturally into his hold.

It outweighed her feeling of dread in a way, although they hadn't really had time alone where they could talk leaving her not feeling sure as to how he felt about this whole thing. Now they were alone, and she held his hand carefully, almost as if if she moved the wrong way he'd be gone again. A silly thought for most maybe, but not for her, not today. She found them a spot and sat down in the grass, placing the lantern down next to her.

When he asked her if he should get them drinks, she nodded. "Sure, lemonade would be good." she said, unsure what else to say, and reluctantly letting go of his hand so he could go get them some drinks. She waited for him to return, and when he did she waited until he sat down, smiling softly. "So, do you think Maddie has been settling in okay? I know it's a big change for her and all that, can't be easy." she said when he had returned. She watched the water for a moment and gave him time to answer.

Finally, she swallowed her breath and glanced over to him. "I...really missed you, you know." she managed. "I just...wished you would have been able to tell me instead of...well, that."

Oliver couldn’t help but tease Scout on what book she brought with her. It felt like everywhere they went, she was carrying one of her schoolbooks, and even when he came across her here last year she was engrossed in one of her marine texts.

He whistled lightly when she held out the small book she had brought along. “That’s a tiny one. Are you sure that’s going to keep you entertained all evening?” he asked. He chuckled lightly as she stuck her tongue out at him. “Mm, yeah, pretty much. Or do you not remember all the textbooks strewn across the apartment? I almost tripped over one the other day,” he said, though he was only teasing.

He leaned over and gave her a quick kiss. “Now that’s the kind of talk I like to hear,” he said with a grin. “Maybe when this is over we can go home and recreate what we did last year, without all the unpleasantness of the following days,” he added.

Misha talked softly to Kenzie as she laid in his lap. She leaned back against her father’s chest, absentmindedly grabbing at his hand as she looked out at the lake. Kenzie was usually a very energetic child, but she had missed her nap today, and it wouldn’t be long before she fell asleep.

Another voice distracted him and he turned to look and saw Ella standing nearby. “Oh, hi Ella,” Misha said as Kenzie pushed herself up to see who her daddy was talking to. She perked up when she saw it was her babysitter and scrambled to get out of her daddy’s lap. Misha helped her get to her feet.

“Here for the festival as well?” he asked as Kenzie waddled over to Ella. “Lala,” she said, hands outstretched. “Up!”

She hated this. They had just settled in their new home in the valley, and Paige was already to leave. She hadn't believed it when her father had said they were moving. Surely it had to have been a joke.

Well it wasn't.

Now here they were, living in the filthy valley. Granted, their house was much better than the one bed room apartment they had previously resided in, but she still missed it. She missed being in the city with her friends, being able to walk or take the bus out to the library, even the trash in the streets.

Mostly she missed the way things were when her mother was around.

Paige had decided to head out to the Firefly Festival, just to get away from it all. The only good thing about being in the valley was being able to come to these festivals more often. Perhaps it could make her forget how horrible her life had become.

Looking up from the lake for a moment, the girl spotted a familiar face, but quickly turned away. She wasn't sure if she could face Zeke at the moment, especially with everything going on. Their "date" went alright, though she still wasn't sure if it was a date or not. He had seemed so chill about it.

Either way, the girl looked away from him, hoping that maybe he didn't see her.

Firefly Festival Year 03
Ella smiled at Misha as he greeted her. She took her feet out of the water and waited for them to dry. ”Yeah, even if it’s just metaphorically and to deal with unfinished businesses. How about you?” Eleanor asked as she noticed Kenzie walking towards her, Ella got up and picked Kenzie up and touched the baby’s nose gently. ”Hey sweetie.”.

”Want to go search for fairies with me during fall?” Eleanor asked Kenzie and then looked at Misha, she wasn’t going to take Kenzie searching for imaginary fairies in the woods without his consent. ”Maybe even bring back some fairy dust, what do you say sweetie?” she asked the baby, but once again turned to Misha.

Fiona waited for Jackson, she was could still hear distinct sounds and not just noise. Lady was excited when she saw Jackson. Fiona looked at Jackson’s direction and smiled. ”Hey, don’t worry, you’re not late.” Fiona said looking at Jackson.

”Well, I think Lady is excited to see you.” Fiona commented as Lady walked around Jackson trying to get his attention. ”Do you want a lantern? I’m going to put this one on the water.” she mentioned showing her lantern to Jackson.

”I also brought food, maybe you can relax a little today?” she said. She knew he was under a lot of stress but there was nothing wrong about letting it go for a few hours.

NOTES

Firefly Festival Year 03
Zeke watched the girl turn around, maybe she didn’t see it was him and there wasn’t any other Badgers around, his siblings were behaving like uncontrollable primates and at that moment Paige seemed like the safest choice of company. He didn’t dislike her, she was nice, she was police and she was smart, too good for her own good and way too naïve, but at least she was smart.
The young boy approached her and tapped on her shoulder. ”Paige?” he called her before taking his hand off her shoulder and onto his pocket along with his other hand. He stood there looking at her for a while, maybe she was avoiding him, maybe she hadn’t seen him.

”Here to mourn or just to do what most people are doing? Having fun with family?”
