Oliver was having little luck talking with the townspeople of Ioana. They were all so stubborn and pigheaded, so he would try his luck with the mayor again. It was easy enough to scare the wits out of Tobias and Oliver knew that he had the spine of a jellyfish. Eventually all the pressure Westhaven put on him to hand over the town would cause him to break.

But before he could get to Tobias, he’d have to get through one of the most obstinate women he knew.

Penelope Pippin.

Unfortunately the two didn’t have the best relationship, and while the two had had a lot of fun in the bedroom in previous seasons, once she found out who he really was, things went south. Now, speaking to her was like talking to a toddler. A toddler that liked to scream. Oliver would just have to sneak his way through Penny’s defenses to get to see good ol’ Toby.

He pushed open the doors to Town Hall and walked right up to Penny’s desk without a care in the world. “Hello there Penny dear. I’m here to see the mayor, but I’m sure you already know that.” He looked to the door to the mayor’s office. “Right through there, yeah? I assume he’s not busy, so I can just go right on in.”

"It's sad but it's true how society says her life is already over"

Since Aunt Bessy had gotten wind of her "condition" as the town's gossiper had so tactfully decided to refer to it as, the secret was out. Penny had tried to hide her pregnancy for a little longer with baggy clothes, but still nosy villagers came up to ask her questions that tended, more often than not, to be very inappropriate. The one that angered her most was "Do you know who the father is?" which was always spoken with a disapproving look to which Penny wanted to punch the face it belonged to. As of Spring 20, she embraced the pregnancy body. She'd bought herself some pretty maternity clothes and her new mentality was fuck everyone.

She wore one of her new dresses today, a cute polka-dot ensemble that resembled a dress she used to wear to work. Sat down, however, the large typewriter and desk concealed how the dress clung to her figure and accentuated her bump.

Penny hadn't been having the best day at work and that was before Oliver showed up. When he burst through the front doors, Penny groaned. Audibly.

"Absolutely not,"
she retorted. "You might have a whole slew of cronies to do your dirty work for you, but I'll have you know that here at Town Hall we are very busy. The mayor, in particular, is busy with matters that I cannot disclose to you so I respectfully request you return back to the shitty city is it you are from and actually formally arrange a meeting with the mayor. Your status might get you privilege in Westhaven but here, you're just the same as anyone. Write a letter or telephone in and if I decide your reason to see the mayor is worthy, I'll book you in for the next available opening. Do you understand, or do I need to repeat that for you again?"

Penny glared at him as he continued to eye up the door. "I swear, Oliver," she said, now standing up so she could block his path. "Don't you dare go through that door. I'll have you arrested for trespassing. You can rot in a cell for the night for all I care."

Oliver wasn’t surprised by the icy welcome he received from Penny. It was pretty typical for their meetings now, no matter when or why they met. He chuckled lightly at her anger. It was quite amusing how easily he could wind her up.

“Busy huh? What, did you guys give ol’ Toby back there some building blocks to play with so he couldn’t get into any trouble? Told him you needed a scale model of Ioana made up for some wack-ado reason?”

It was common knowledge that Tobias was a pretty shit mayor. How he managed to stay in power this long was beyond Oliver, but he was sure the feisty little blonde had something to do with that. He looked at the mayor’s door. It would be so easy to cross the room and be in his office before anyone had time to move but Penny seemed to sense his plan because she stood up in preparation for his attack.

However, his thoughts were distracted when he looked down to see the rounded bump of her stomach. His jaw dropped and his mind emptied of anything except math. How long again had it been since he had last slept with her? “You...you’re pregnant?”

Of all the people Itris could throw her way, it just had to be Oliver Triston, didn't it? Itris wasn't content with having Aunt Bessy getting wind of her "condition" as the nosey old widow had obnoxiously said, oh no. Torture was the Goddess' plan for the pregnant Penny who was already emotional and really didn’t need the additional stress.

She let his comments echo around the room as she stood, rolling her eyes at his sarcasm. Pathetic, she thought. How she'd ever fucked this man was a mystery to her. But fucked him she had, and Penny was momentarily confused at the horrified look that washed over his face... until she realised where those eyes were looking.

"Yes,"
she replied, defensiveness fierce in her voice as a hand instinctively moved to rest on her stomach.

Penny could understand a comment about her pregnancy. Up in his fancy Westhaven penthouse, Aunt Bessy's gossip probably didn't reach Oliver's ears so this was no doubt news to him. But that shocked look, now that she couldn't understand. Or at least, not until she did.

Penny practically spat her next words out as she glared at Oliver with disgust. "It's not yours, you moron."

"Goddess, Oliver,"
Penny continued. "Either keep a track of who you're fucking and when or use a damned condom.”

It made her skin crawl, the idea of Oliver Triston being the father of her child. Penny needed all of thoughts of daddy Oliver out of her mind, stat.

When was the last time he had slept with Penny? Was it sometime in Summer? Or Early Autumn? Either left the possibility of him being the father if she was that far along. He glanced down at her stomach. It should be bigger if she was about to pop, right?

Penny seemed to figure out what he was thinking, cause she instantly put his mind at ease with the words “it’s not yours” though he could’ve done without the insults that followed immediately after. But they wouldn’t be Oliver and Penny if they didn’t throw in a good handful of insults during their exchanges.

Oliver quickly pulled himself together and cleared his throat. “Well thank Itris for that. I’d hate to think any child of mine was being raised in this wasteland.” If he ever did get a woman pregnant, his child would be raised in Westhaven. There were more opportunities there. Ioana had nothing, and no Triston child would be less than exceptional.

He smirked at the hormonal blonde. “I’ve got more important things to think about than keeping track of a few mindless flings,” he told her. Even if he wanted to keep track now, the only woman he was currently sleeping with was his girlfriend and he was pretty sure he’d know if Scout was pregnant. Not that they planned for that to happen anytime soon. “For instance, things like getting a meeting with good ol’ Toby here. So if we’re done here...”

Penny had to sit down. Her stomach was beginning to feel like curdled milk. The morning sickness she’d experienced in her first trimester had continued on into her second, and Penny was annoyed that it caused her legs to buckle like she was weak. She was even more annoyed when Oliver referred to her home as a wasteland, and utterly pissed when she realised she just didn’t have the energy to fire a classic spew of Penny hate at him.

“Oh, just fuck off, Oliver,”
she told him. “You know for an Itris-damned fact that you don’t actually have an appointment with the mayor. You’re not in my book so maybe rather than wasting my time, if you really want to speak to the mayor, why don’t you go throw proper procedural and book an appointment, alright? I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: you might get whatever you want in Westhaven, but your name doesn’t fly here. This is my reception and you’re not passing through.”

“You know Penny, you’re a lot more pleasant when you’re pregnant. You should do it more often,” Oliver said with a wicked grin.

He wasn’t afraid of Penny trying to stop him from seeing Toby. He was stronger than her, so he could easily move her out of the way. And with the beach ball growing out of her stomach, he was sure he could get to the door long before her.

“And how exactly do you plan on keeping me from getting to Toby?” Oliver asked. “What? You got a crossbow under that desk that you’re gonna shoot me with?”

She hated him. She hated him so Goddess-damned much. Penny was going to utter under her breath each night how much she hated Oliver Triston so that when her baby popped out, its first words would be “I fucking hate Oliver Triston.”

On second thoughts, Penny thought she’d restrict the cursing. “I hate Oliver Triston” was a strong enough sentence as it was. She wanted her child to despise Oliver but not to be a potty mouth. No, she would be a good mom teaching her kid to hate but not to swear.

Without skipping eye-contact with Oliver, Penny picked up her phone calmly and dialled a nine and a one. Her finger hovered above the final one.

“No, but I’ll happily call the police on you. Now…”
she said, using her free hand to tap her chin like she was in thought. “I don’t think the police would take too kindly to a big man like yourself viciously harassing a small, pregnant woman, do you?”

“And don’t forget, Oliver,”
she continued, drawling out his name as a sly smile spread across her face. “These aren’t your pathetic, weak city policemen, oh no. The village policemen are strong, burly men and, well… raving rednecks, as you might call them. They won’t hesitate to break that pretty little face of yours.”

Penny let her shoulders relax as she smiled innocently at Oliver, a fiery look returning to her eyes. He’d been wrong about her. She wasn’t a lot more pleasant now that she was pregnant. She was simply less hot-headed insults, more devious threats.

Hayden had been working on cleaning up the bathroom when she heard all the commotion outside. Penny was noticeably pregnant by now (Hayden had taken to calling her unborn baby Captain of the SS Penny and whether the other woman liked it or not the name had stuck) and she at first thought maybe the woman was just having an influx of hormones. But then she heard a name.

Oliver. Oh good, they had some good old celebrity “Give me all your homes and get the fuck out” company. For a while she simply listened to the conversation, though when Penny mentioned the cops, Hayden knew she was half blowing smoke out her ass the way she spoke about them.

After all, While she was 90% sure that Andy could benchpress six or seven school children at once if she so desired, she didn’t know if that was going to scare Oliver. But when it didn’t seem like Oliver was going to go anywhere, Hayden glanced up to the corner of the bathroom to where a large spider was hanging out. “I have to do everything in this place don’t I?”

The spider didn’t answer but she was already out the door, making her way out of the small hallway with mop on hand. She used the mop to solidly place herself on top of Penny’s desk, flipping the mop and in a swift motion pointing the furry end of the mop at Oliver’s face. “Step away from the Submarine.” She said, blotting the mop in his direction as if holding off a prowling lion.

She sat herself upon the desk, crossing one leg over the other. “Aside from getting too close to precious Cargo, you’re not gonna find Toby in there.” She mentioned, her face straight and voice carrying the same monotone it always did. “I forgot to tell Penny here that I sent the Mayor out just before my lunch break. There were a lot of spiders in his office...like a lot of spiders. The ol’ Mayor’s always in there and the place was getting a little rank.” She hopped up, walking closer to Oliver and placing her hands behind her back. “Have you ever seen a mutant spider, Oliver? I wasn’t going to take any chances, so I had to use some really strong chemicals. So I’m afraid I can’t let you go in there or I’d be risking the health of the public, understand?” She walked back towards the mayors door and wrapped her rag around the handles. “And if you don’t well....I may just have to shove that mop handle so far up your ass that your family is going to be feeling it for a few generations. And try to remember, I’m both not pregnant and grew up downtown.” For a smaller thing, Hayden did know how to scrap.

Oliver wasn’t afraid of the cops, and Penny’s threats meant nothing to him. He had dealt with cops all his life, and had been thrown in jail more than a few times for a rowdy evening. If anything did happen, he could always call on his trusty police chief to get him out, though he doubted these cops would do anything more than escort him from the premises.

Oliver was about to tell her to go ahead and call them, when a familiar face popped up with a mop in hand. Oh, how intriguing that two of his old flings would both be living in Ioana and working in the same dusty building.

Hayden prattled on about spiders and the like. Apparently good ol’ Toby wasn’t in his office, or at least that was the story she was going to stick with. He shook his head as Hayden moved back to the mayor’s office, blocking it. “Well, Penny, you sure do keep interesting company. While I would love to see just what Hayden here could do with a mop handle, if Toby really isn’t here, then my business here is pointless.”

He turned, walking back towards the exit before turning back around to Penny. “Oh, Penny, do try to stay out of flammable buildings. I hear things have been getting pretty hot around here.” With that he gave a wink to Hayden before seeing himself out.

Penny was thankful that backup arrived, Hayden basically telling Oliver that she was going to shove a mop up his ass if he didn’t disappear in the next five seconds. Although Penny still thought she could kick a bitch in the balls if she needed to, she was happy for the support and crossed her arms, glaring at Oliver.

Oliver got the message. He wasn’t welcome here and he had a problem on his hands if he tried to take on the women of Town Hall. But, he couldn’t leave without reminding Penny just how much of a dick he was, oh no. He had an interesting choice of ominous words as he left, ones that had Penny instinctively placing her hand over her stomach. She stared, watching as he finally left the building.

“What do you think he meant by that?”
Penny spoke quietly, an obviously panicked tone in her voice. She was pregnant, for crying out loud. Anything that threatened her soon-to-be child caused her a sleepless night. “You don’t think that was a threat, do you?”

In any other state (i.e., not pregnant), Penny wouldn’t have given a shit and would have just dismissed Oliver as being his normal dickish self. But with the fear of more fires striking Ioana ever since they’d learned the cause was arson, Penny couldn’t help but wonder the worst. Was the arsonist planning on targeting her? She'd always been an influential figure of Ioana, after all.
