Grace had come back to Ioana Valley with hopes and dreams of her old life again. Those hopes and dreams didn't last long, however, when she arrived back in town to see the dire state the Valley was in now. More of her neighbors had sold to Westhaven, and it seemed her whole road had been bought up. But she was back now, to at least get her home back, or that's what she thought.

For years, she save up every penny she earned, worked her ass off at job after job, just to build up enough money to buy back her childhood home. And what did they go and do? Denied her! Even though she had more than what Drenderly & Co. had purchased the home for, they wouldn't sell back. The mayor was no help either. According to him there was "nothing he could do" and "his hands were tied here." What a bunch of bull! Oh, but he could offer her another home, on another road, at a reasonable price. That started her up on the yelling, and eventually she was escorted out of the Town Hall much to her displeasure.

So here she was, dragging her suitcase along, on her way to the church. She didn't know where else to go, and the church had always been the place she could sit and clear her head when things were going wrong. It was the same place she found herself seven years ago, when her ma and pop told her they would be packing up for the city. She had spent hours crying and cursing in one of the back pews, praying for Itris to turn her family's fortune around. Either Itris never heard her prayers, or couldn't be bothered to help her villagers, because no matter how many prayers she offered, all of her stuff was still packed up and shipped off to Westhaven, along with her and her family.

She could only hope Itris would hear her prayers today though as she opened one of the doors to the church. Sitting her suitcase by the door, Grace walked up the aisle, her hand lightly touching the backs of the pews as she made her way towards the front and took a seat. Taking a deep breath, Grace began to speak, feeling tears waiting to roll down her cheeks. "Itris, what am I going to do? I've nowhere to call home," she started. Sure she could buy one of those other houses the mayor suggested, but she didn't want to waste her money on another home and lose all she had saved for her old home. "This place use to be home, and now it just feels so empty...I feel empty." A tear broke through, gliding it's way down her cheek. "Oh, what have I gotten myself in to?"

For what it was worth, Odette knew that she, nor the Harvest King, nor the Harvest Goddess, could solve everything.

As much as she would want to, she couldn't. Odette wanted nothing more than to help the town become prosperous again and bring back the people from her childhood, from the city, make the Valley thrive in joy and laughter again. She prayed like no tomorrow, more than most of the people who were here, but it didn't really make her think about it more than she needed to. It was all that she thought about, on most occasions, because she had nothing else to think about.

All she was doing was being out the back of the church, fixing up her soft pink hair into her signature pigtails when she heard a voice in the main church, and she blinked into the mirror. She hadn't even heard the door go, and Odette froze, wondering if it was someone who was going to vandalise, come and find her and hurt her, someone from the city - all of the worst possibilities ran through her head while she fidgeted with her hair, wondering what she should do. But, she reminded herself, she was the Priestess, a representative of the Goddess and the King. She would have to go out there and approach them, because that was her role.

So Odette left the back room tentatively, peeking out of the door before her eyes fell on the girl sitting in the front row. And she was crying. No. Odette couldn't be having that. Her soft voice carried through the silence of the church as she approached the girl, not recognising who it was until after her initial talk. "The Goddess hears you," Odette said softly. "There is no need for tears. All will be well." And then she recognised the features in front of her, and Odette blinked. "Grace? Is that you?"

What was she to do? Without her home in the fields, she couldn't stay here. And she couldn't go back to the city; she would never hear the end of it from her brother. There had to be a way to buy her home back from the real estate company.

Grace was so focused on her own pity, that she didn't even hear the movement going on elsewhere in the church. It wasn't until the voice broke past the sounds of her cried that Grace looked up, quickly brushing away the tears she had let out. She couldn't let some stranger see her crying here over a little piece of property.

But it was more than just a piece of property wasn't it? It was her home, full of memories of her childhood days, the days before she had been forced to go to the city. She had never wanted to leave it in the first place, and now she was being told she could never have it back.

"Grace, is that you?"

Grace finally registered who the person was standing in front of her. Grace's family and her family had left the Valley at the same time, only Odette has been allowed to stay because she was of age, where as Grace was only 13 and forced to stay with her family.

Grace jumped from her seat in the pew and wrapped her arms around the shorter girl. "Oh, Odette, I'm so happy to see you!" she said still holding on to the pink-haired girl. Grace needed to see a familiar face right now, even if the two hadn't been very close before her family moved. Grace was a few years younger than Odette, but any piece of her old life was much needed right now.

"Today has not been a good day," she said, finally letting Odette go. "They won't let me buy back my old home. I don't know what to do."

She hadn't been prepared for the sudden hug, and she stumbled backwards a little bit as she attempted to regain her balance and hug the other girl. They had been friends, in a way, since childhood, even though Odette was much older than Grace at the time. They had only talked a few times and Odette had been far too shy to strike up any long lasting friendship, but it didn't mean that she didn't remember a face. The girl had gone to the city so long ago that it was as if they would have forgotten each other, but clearly not.

Odette wanted to ask why the girl was crying, but she answered the question before Odette could actually come out with it. She was far too reserved for this job sometimes, she figured, but Grace had never been one to hide her feelings, as far as she was aware. She frowned at the answer she was given. That didn't make any sense. Had that street been bought up? It had been such a long time since she had gone properly around the town to see what was left that she couldn't remember anything. Maybe it had happened after the last time she had done that round.

"That's absolutely ridiculous..." she whispered to herself, making a thought of going down to the estate agency herself and talking to them. But that thought alone scared the life out of her, because she doubted they would even listen to a shy four foot eight Priestess. "Does that mean you have nowhere to go? Where are your parents?"

It was great for Grace to see a familiar face. Everything about Westhaven had been so different for Grace and she has hated not being able to experience nature like she could in Ioana. She had never felt safe in Westhaven. It was too overcrowded and everyone was so self-focused, it was nothing like Ioana.

Here is Ioana she could feel free to collapse into someone's arms and pour her heart out. She felt safe and comforted just being inside the Valley's town limits. It was her home, and just being back made her feel more life herself. She just wished she could have her old house too. All the town was doing was letting it sit there and fall apart. At east is they sold it back to her she could fix it up again.

She shook her head at Odette's questions. "My parents are back in Westhaven. They've grown accustom to the 'comfortable' lifestyle there." They had wanted her to stay too. Use the money she had been saving to go get a degree and a good paying job in Westhaven, but Grace hated that city too much to stay any longer.

"I saved up all my money to buy back my home, not to buy back some other piece of land in town." The mayor had the audacity to recommend a house by the woods for her. "Just as nice as your old home," he had said to her. She had come close to spitting in his face from anger, but she was escorted out fairly quickly. "I can't go back to Westhaven with my parents. I hate it there. I guess I could get a room at the Inn and hope I could wear down the estate agency before I go through all of my savings."

It was something that she was good at, listening. She wasn't much of a talker so Odette was easily a much better listener by default, and as a result of that she could offer whatever advice they needed. They said she was a good Priestess because of that, not because of the things that she poured out at them in a service. It was better for a Priestess to be there for them and tell them what was the right thing to do, not force them to think the way she thought they all should. It was always better that way.

She couldn't imagine Westhaven being comfortable, but she nodded nonetheless. When people had businesses to run, she could at least understand that the valley wasn't the best place to do it at the moment, and that was more than likely the reason why they had adjusted to the city well. But Grace was never that type, and so Odette could see why the younger girl had got away as soon as she could have done to come back. Only to have it thrown back in her face with her childhood home.

It wasn't something that she usually did, but the girl was desperate and Odette hardly wanted a girl that she had been friends with, sort of, struggling like she would be. That wasn't how she was raised. "You're welcome to stay in the church until we can sort something more permanent out," she suggested softly. "I can go and talk to the mayor tomorrow, or sometime this week, if you would like. Hopefully I have some influence."

Grace finally felt like she was calming down now that she was talking to an old acquaintance. Odette had a presence about her that was a comfort to Grace, but that was most of Ioana for her. Now if only she could figure out where she was going to live in town since the mayor was adamant that she couldn't buy back her childhood home.

"You're welcome to stay in the church until we can sort something more permanent out." Grace smiled at Odette, wrapping her arms around her again. "Oh my goddess, really?" she asked, letting her go again. "Are you sure? I don't want to put you out or anything." Odette had no idea how much this meant to Grace. She had somewhere to stay, and she didn't have to waste thousands of G a week renting out an Inn room until she could wear down the estate agency.

"I can go and talk to the mayor tomorrow, or sometime this week, if you would like. Hopefully I have some influence." Grace shook her head. She didn't need to worry Odette with her problems, plus Grace was a bit more outspoken then Odette was. "You don't have to worry about that. I'm sure the mayor will get tired of seeing my face in Town Hall soon enough," she said with a half smile. In truth, she wasn't sure if her protest would do any good. The mayor seemed to be afraid of the men running Drenderly & Co. Grace wasn't afraid of them though. She would be on their door every day until they got sick of seeing her and gave her her home back.

It was easy for Odette to offer a place to Grace, because she had a feeling that her mother would have scolded her for not doing so and it wasn’t in her nature to deny people things that she could easily have given them. There was room in the church for plenty of people and she offered shelter to those who needed it when they were stranded, so she didn’t know why Grace would have been any different in that case. All Grace would have to do was help out a little, and even then, Odette knew she probably wouldn’t even let her do all that much while she was around. It was just what she was like.

She was more prepared for the hug this time around, and she smiled a little more easily even though it almost felt like she was being crushed by the taller girl. It had nothing to do with the force of Grace’s hug, it was simply because Odette was short enough to feel that way around taller people. It was even the same with Dean, despite the fact that they had been friends for years. It was just how she felt.”Really, it’s fine. I should help out people in need, right? And I’m not letting you pay out so much for a room.” Odette knew that the Inn was in need of money, but rooms cost a lot and she wasn’t sure how much funds the girl actually had.

In reality, Odette didn’t look forward to going to talk to the estate agents, because they had already been around her church and tried to offer her ridiculous amounts for the land, but she had been stubborn enough as it was. There was no way she was stepping back in there and attempting to demand they give her friend her home. Odette just wasn’t like that, and she figured that Grace was better at the wearing-down operation than Odette ever would be. She smiled. “I’m sure,” she laughed softly. She guessed, in the end, it would be alright.

The goddess had led Grace to the church today, of that she was sure. When she had first stumbled into the estate agency with the high hopes of finally getting back her childhood home, and having those quickly diminished by the mayor and everyone else, she was lost and hurt. Now that she at least knew she would have a roof over her head for the time being, she felt the peacefulness of Ioana Valley consume her.

”Really, it’s fine. I should help out people in need, right? And I’m not letting you pay out so much for a room.” The priestess told her and Grace couldn't be more grateful for the pink-haired girl. While she could very well stay at the Inn, and pay whatever prices they demanded, it would eat away at her savings and possibly make it so her only option would be to return to Westhaven. Just thinking of returning there made it shudder.

"I promise I'll help out with all the cleaning and the cooking while I'm here. I don't want you to have to wait on me or anything. I really appreciate you letting me stay here, really." The sad girl that had walked into the church earlier was gone now, replaced by the energetic bunny rabbit standing before Odette now. Grace couldn't remembered the last time she had been this happy.

Odette offered to go speak to the estate agency, but Grace turned her down. She could handle them on her own, and didn't want to get the church into any trouble by getting Odette involved. Plus, Grace was a lot more outspoken and certainly she could wear down those uptight businessmen. "I mean how can they say no to this face?" she asked Odette, with one of her more innocent looks plastered on her face. It helped that Grace already had a young and childlike face, but with a little bit of puppy dog eyes, and a tiny little frown, she was sure to melt some hearts. And if that didn't work, she could always go back to her tantrum like screaming.

She was happier now that she could see that Grace was happier, and she could relax a bit easier. As long as she wasn't upset and she had helped in some way, Odette could be relieved. She didn't want to leave a friend in need, knowing that Grace's savings could be sapped away so easily if nothing went ahead with the house, and she would have been sad to see her old friend forced out of the valley as soon as she had come in. That wasn't how friends treated each other, and so Odette summoned up all her willingness to help her friend and it had worked.

"It's no problem, really. I wouldn't worry about it. You'll be fine." She didn't really know what else to say, at the end of it. At least Grace was bouncing around like her former self at the moment, and now she had to think of everything that she had to do. Find Grace an extra bed, make her wardrobe space, make sure that there was enough food in and the rest of it. As long as Odette had a certain list of things that she needed to do, she had it handled, and she could get it sorted quickly enough.

She laughed again, softly. "They definitely have to give in to that, of course."

Odette didn’t want Grace to worry about helping around the church, but Grace wouldn’t have it. She wouldn’t sit around like a lost puppy and have her hostess take care of her. She had spent the last few years of her life hard at work to get herself back to the Valley, and now that she was here, she realized there was still a lot of work to be done.

Grace showed off one of her signature poor girl looks that were often very useful in the city. Surely the estate agency couldn’t say no to face like that and Odette seemed to agree. "They definitely have to give in to that, of course." Grace let her face light up again and laughed along with the priestess. It was kind of silly to think that a simple look would fix all her problems, but a girl could dream right?

With her worries about her housing arrangements behind her, Grace could now focus on the Valley, and how different it had become since she had left. Seven years had sure done a number of the small village. “Okay, you have to fill me in now,” she told Odette as she sat back down in the pew she had vacated earlier. “So much has changed since I’ve left. What’s going on here? I noticed my old street is completely sold up now. Has it really gotten that bad?”

She was the kind of person to take care of everyone given half the chance, but if that wasn't going to be the case Odette didn't have the mental strength to be able to have a long argument about it. She wasn't going to argue with Grace before they had even started this future partnership, but she wasn't going to bring it up. She supposed the topic would probably come up in time if it was important, but she was sure that Grace had a lot more on her plate than she did. That was just how it was.

If anything, Odette did doubt that the estate agency would budge, but she didn't want to do anything to make Grace's hopes seem less likely. The valley wasn't the city and there was probably no way the city agencies would ever hand over the land that they had managed to secure from their victims. They were like leeches, when Odette thought about it more. They were leeches sucking away at what the valley had and clinging on when everyone was trying to pluck them off.

She took a seat next to Grace when the other girl sat and she mused on the questions silently, the only evidence of her discomfort being the fidgeting of her hands over her knees. "It's worse than when you left, certainly," she answered softly. "The area where you used to live is pretty much gone, and a lot of people have left for the same reason our parents did. Things are struggling... but the Valley is trying. I just pray to the Goddess for something to go right."

Grace needed to get her mind off her home. She had all the time in the world to argue with the estate agency, and become that annoying little fly that never seemed to go away. Certainly with persistence and the funds to cover the cost of the land, she would wear them down eventually. At least that’s what she hoped.

For now, Grace wanted to know the state of the rest of the Valley. Who was still in town, who had left and hopefully to hear that things were getting better. Grace wanted the valley to be thriving again, to teach the city that they couldn’t bully them into surrender.

"It's worse than when you left, certainly." Grace frowned at the girl’s words. This was not what she wanted to hear at all. "The area where you used to live is pretty much gone, and a lot of people have left for the same reason our parents did. Things are struggling... but the Valley is trying. I just pray to the Goddess for something to go right." Grace shook her head. “I wish no one had ever left. It’s making it easier for the city to run the rest of us out of here. We can’t let them destroy our home. There has to be something we can do to fight back, right?”

She didn't want to disappoint Grace, but she feared that was all she could do. After all, the situation in the Valley was bleak and there was no way that she could make it seem any better than it was. She wasn't going to sugarcoat anything at the moment, but she didn't want to upset grace. Perhaps the biggest problem of the day had been sorted,  and she wanted to leave the worst things to another day, but it was probably just as easy to try and get things over with now.

But no matter what way she looked at it, Odette could find no way to be able to console her companion in any way at all. "I wish it was that easy," she sighed. "Most of the people who are staying are refusing to let go of what they have. Some of them are buckling - I fear that the mayor... He may be starting to give in. The only thing we can really do is keep the faith.. Try not to let them get to us... but you just have to trust that everyone will do what they can to keep Ioana alive."

Odette believed that the valley was trying, but Grace didn't see it. How hard could they have been trying if they had allowed all the homes on Sonora to be bought up so easily. The valley citizens needed a push to take a stand against the city, and Grace was the stubborn girl who would do just that.

"I wish it was that easy. Most of the people who are staying are refusing to let go of what they have. Some of them are buckling - I fear that the mayor... He may be starting to give in. The only thing we can really do is keep the faith.. Try not to let them get to us... but you just have to trust that everyone will do what they can to keep Ioana alive."

Grace shook her head. Was faith and trust really enough? There had to be something more the villagers could do. They had to show the city that Ioana could not easily be bought.

"There has to be more we can do," she told the priestess. She had finally fled Westhaven after 7 years. There was no way she wanted to see Ioana turn into it. "Maybe we can hold a rally? Or start a petition?"

[ooc: Would you like to wrap this up in the next post? Then we can start more fun plots :)]
