Both of them had lived in Westhaven for a time, and they both agreed Ioana was a far more pleasant place to live. Not only was it more affordable to live in Ioana, but the residents were far more agreeable to those of Westhaven.

"It's also, by far, a better place to raise children here. It's quiet and, though I'm not exactly the socialising type, the few people I've met have all been so lovely to us. For example, nobody in the city would ever have offered us a slice of pie and milk,"

Grace smiled, looking at little Oliver who was happily satisfying the needs of his tummy while the grownups talked. Grace couldn’t imagine how hard it was to be a single parent, but judging by Oliver’s good behavior thus far, she reckoned Elliot was doing an excellent job raising him thus far.

"There's quite a few cookbooks in the library. The only problem is, they're scattered all over the place. I know they exist because I've seen them listed, but... the place is still very disorganised. I've tried but I just don't seem to be getting very far with it. It's a very large library. Beautiful, however, though it's a little rundown..."

Grace thought on it for a moment. One person trying to conquer the disorganized library was ambitious, even in a small town like this one. He had his work cut out for him if he planned to continue on alone.

“Maybe you can get some temporary helpers. Start up a little volunteer committee?” she suggested. “I’m sure that there are plenty of people in town who would want to help.”

Elliot A. Mercier
SUNDAY SUMMER 8, YEAR ONE • MORNING • CLOUDY • ELLIOT'S OUTFIT OLIVER'S OUTFITBelle
"I've got this now, my legs are steady now, the angels warned me never to fall down"

The idea wasn’t a new one to Elliot; he’d considering getting some helpers in before. The only issue was that Elliot couldn’t pay these helpers. His stipend was small and Elliot couldn’t afford to try and split it. It was unlikely that the town hall would give him extra money to pay for helpers, or be able to support helpers directly. It would have to be help of a volunteering-nature, and Elliot felt guilty asking for that. He was the librarian and it felt like the library was his sole responsibility. Even admitting that he struggled to run it alone felt like it would jeopardise the security of his position.

“Maybe,”
Elliot mumbled. “I’m okay, though. I’m just a little slow to get my bearings. The library will be organised soon, I imagine.”

Elliot felt a warmth suddenly slide onto his side. With a tummy full of pie and milk and after a good cry earlier, Oliver had become sleepy. The chatter of the adults had become a dull drone, background noise, and Oliver was falling asleep. He was almost fully asleep when Elliot scooped him up, but was awake enough to wrap his arms loosely around his father’s neck.

“I think somebody wants a nap,”
Elliot whispered, smiling. Oliver wasn't the only one who wanted a nap - Elliot always took advantage of Oliver's sleep times to count sheep too. “We’d best be going, then,” he said, standing up. “But thank you ever so much, Grace, for the pie and milk. It really did the trick in calming Oliver down! We’ll have to visit your shop sometime, if that’s okay with you.”

“Maybe, I’m okay, though. I’m just a little slow to get my bearings. The library will be organised soon, I imagine.”

Grace didn’t believe him, but she didn’t argue it. He was a single father doing his best to raise his son and hold down his job. Organizing the library was a big task, and he could get it done eventually on his own, but it would take a long time. It would be quicker with help, but for some people accepting help meant admitting defeat. Grace didn’t know much about Elliot, but maybe organizing the library on his own was his way of proving to himself that he could manage the task.

The two could have gone on for a while more, but the young boy had had his fill of pie now and was dozing off to sleep. Grace smiled as Elliot scooped up Oliver and got up from the table.

“I think somebody wants a nap. We’d best be going, then, but thank you ever so much, Grace, for the pie and milk. It really did the trick in calming Oliver down! We’ll have to visit your shop sometime, if that’s okay with you.”

Grace nodded as she saw the two out. “Of course, it was my pleasure. And yes feel free to stop by the shop anytime, and you’re always welcome to pop up here after service if someone gets the rumbly tummies again,” she said with a light laugh.
