"Beware the Demon who looks like you. "

    Date: Spring 16th, Year 3

It hadn't taken much effort to set it all up.

The Valley was lulled at night, and there weren't many people on the lookout for anything one may have deemed "Suspicious". Around him the Valley slept, and that was just the kind of thing that made his job easy. The room that he had found his way into via a simple lockpick was the perfect place that would facilitate the start of a dangerous blaze. He held a large can of gasoline in his hands. The Ioana Archives. They wouldn't be stupid enough to place their precious deeds here, that much he knew.

But as he picked up a file or so, it was clear that there happened to be some important papers in here. Files, older files, marks of Ioana's history rested here, and all of it?

    Fucking useless.

He drew in a deep breath, nearly choking on the smell of old papers and dust. Did people really just keep rooms in this condition all over the valley? Because if that was how things were, then this job for what he was being paid was so much easier than he anticipated. But if those big wigs didn't know any better, then that was their fault. He spread the gasoline over dusty old papers, the battered floor and file cabinets, until he was satisfied with how things were set up, leaving a generous amount of the stuff just in front of the window he had come in from.

And with that, he slipped out, and by that same morning he was standing behind the library, gloved hands wringing together. There were people inside, he had seen them go in. They would be able to leave before the fire got too large, so long as they weren't stupid. He was back by the same window he had come through that night,, and when it was clear no one was going to enter the room, he carefully pulled open the window he had left unlocked.

    Tsssst.

He struck the match, threw it in, and carefully shut the window once more, sure it had lit the gasoline before he fled the scene.

But he was just a normal guy.

"Steven, you're late!" A woman whined as he made his way over to Chesnut street. He smiled slightly, a charming one at that. "Sorry, I got held up coming into the Valley." If the ugly little cur wanted to be upset with him, then that was fine.

    He wasn't Steven anyway.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Kallie had left Jasper with her father that morning, who was in town in order to visit her mother. Logan had needed to work, and Kallie decided that today would be as good a day as any to come help Elliot out in the library. She was chipper that morning (as every other morning), humming something to herself as she organized the books on the shelf one by one. The Dewy Decimal system had taken her a while to get right, but with Elliot's help, it had been easier to get the hang of it.

Kallie hadn't felt like anything was out of the ordinary that morning, at least not until the a strange shattering sound alerted her to something. Glass? What broke? It sounded like it came from the Archives, and that didn't seem normal. "Elliot?" She called, but when she didn't get an answer, she figured Elliot and his son were somewhere else in the building. So she would need to check it out herself. Getting back up, she made her way over the the room's door, normally closed, and reached for the knob.

But she let out a cry of pain as soon as she touched the knob, because the metal was scalding hot. She held onto her hand for a moment before reaching out to feel the door. That was hot too.The realization hit her slowly, but after a few moments, she took off in a sprint, not noticing when the door she had just felt began to crumble with the head.

She finally found Elliot, and she was frantic, but looking over at Oliver, she took a breath to calm herself and walked over to the Librarian. "Elliot. Take Oliver, now. We need to leave." She whispered, still holding onto her burnt hand as she spoke to him in a hushed tone. "There...There's a fire, we need to hurry."

Elliot A. Mercier
TUESDAY SPRING 16, YEAR THREE • MORNING • SUNNY
"My open window, a dream in the dark. My fingers, your face, a spark, a trace"

It was characteristic of life that one could never know when things were about to drastically change. A person would wake up one morning and have an itinerary for their day that they'd never finish. A person would argue with their partner, fully intend on making it right once they got home, only to never get the chance to say sorry. These were the dark taunts to life, ones that people didn't regularly think about because to do so would bring about misery. How could you get up in the morning if you realised you weren't in control and that life could destroy you in all but a second?

Elliot had never experienced such a taunt of life. He'd had hiccups, yes, but never something as great as what life had planned for him today. And on such a beautiful, sunny day as it was with the daffodils on his walk to town having finally appeared, how would Elliot have known?

Kallie was volunteering today, leaving Elliot with a little free time to spend with Oliver. Recently, the situation in the library had been so dire that the poor toddler had been forced to play by himself. Elliot simply had too much work to do. Thus, as Kallie organised the books and continued the grand task of creating an efficient filing system, Elliot excused himself to the toddler's room. He fully intended to teach Oliver how to read time today.

With toy clock in hand and Oliver babbling trying to guess which hand meant what, Elliot didn't hear the glass break. The archives were on the far side of the library and the noise was too faint to notice that something was gravely amiss. Kallie's cry, however, Elliot did hear, and so he quickly sprung to his feet.

"I'll be back in a second, Ollie,"
he said, quickly adjusting the hands of the clock to a random time before he passed it back to Oliver. "Try work out what this time is now, see if you can figure it out before I get back!"

Elliot was quick to leave the room. Though of course he felt concern at hearing Kallie's yell of pain, he felt something greater in his stomach. It was a feeling of dread, perhaps fuelled by the smell of gasoline that Elliot was only just now smelling. He prayed to Itris that his nose was wrong, but it was too late even if Itris could change a thing. Evil always seemed to overpower good.

He finally found Kallie, who was beyond panicked. Elliot didn't feel panic as she relayed the situation to him. For a moment, he was dazed, shocked at what he was hearing. In the next, he was taking charge.

"You leave now, Kallie,"
Elliot instructed, voice strong and serious. "Get yourself out as quickly as possible and contact the authorities. I'll go get Oliver."

Oliver.

Elliot ran faster than he ever had, arriving back in the toddler's room in seconds.

"Daddy, it's-"

He was cut off as he was picked up, wrapped tightly in his father's embrace.

There was something wrong, that much Oliver could sense. He could feel the light trembling of his father's body as he rushed out of the library, quickly finding safety at the opposite end of the street.

It was clear to see the left-hand of the library was already ablaze. Elliot did his best to shield Oliver's eyes, but the child had already seen. He began to cry loudly, terrified. Elliot could do nothing but cradle him. Now that they were safe, he was left to watch, powerless, as his livelihood went up in flames.

Oh no! The library is ablaze!
The arsonist has made his first move and has chosen the library as its first target! This thread is now OPEN to all members to post in. Roleplay out your characters however you wish, whether that's to aid in putting out the fire, to report on it for live television and newspaper coverage, to create conspiracy theories about whodunnit, or to simply look on sadly and to feel sorry for its victims!

Alarms blared through the firehouse, cutting through the firemen's eardrums and flipping a switch somewhere. The relaxed, homey atmosphere in the dining room where Jaime had been hanging out with a few of the other guys dissipated like smoke, replaced by hard eyes and steel resolve. In an instant they were down in the locker room, suiting up as quickly as their bulky gear would allow. Once the alarms started, they had almost no time to get to the scene and mitigate the damage, or save lives. Every second spent getting there was another second the fire had to consume and kill.

Jaime's heart was beating a mile a minute as he struggled into his gear, hopping towards the truck as he pulled on his overalls. This wasn't his first rodeo, he'd dealt with fires before. But the calm, peaceful nature of Ioana had lulled him into a false sense of security and he was out of practice. He donned his jacket and helmet as he jumped into the truck, the last man boarding right after. "Go, go, go!" The last boarder shouted, and they were off in a flash, their sirens screeching in their ears.

They didn't have far to go, just down the street to the library, but in some ways that was even worse. Close to them meant close to everything else in town, and if they couldn't get the fire under control quickly, then it would spread all up and down the street and out into the rest of the town. Jaime would almost feel better if it had been some remote location. At least then the danger of spreading would be lessened.

When they got there, it looked like a portal to hell had exploded out of the building, a towering inferno shooting out of the left side. Jaime heard someone to the right of him curse under their breath as the truck stopped dead in its tracks and the firemen started pouring out. Jaime jumped down out of the truck and immediately ran to one of the hoses, unwinding it from its spool as one of the guys attached the truck to the closest hydrant.

"I think we're gonna need the deluge gun!" He called, taking another look at the fire and wincing as an updraft caught it and sent a pillar of flames shooting out of the left wing as part of the roof collapsed in on itself. The crosslay hoses, which could pump about 95 gallons of water a minute, were usually their first go-to. But he wasn't sure that they could control the fire quickly enough with it, with all of the buildings around them. Most of them were old, matchsticks just waiting to be lit.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

It wasn't very often that the dispatcher sounded the bell, but today there was a sense of Urgency in the Firehouse. There had been a call, a fire, on the same block no less. As soon as the alarm blared through the dire house, his men were down to the locket room as fast as they could move. He drew in a deep breath as he prepared himself for whatever was to come as well. They didn't know the scale of the fire, what was happening, only that they needed to be there and it needed to be NOW.

"Let's go now!" Jackson blared into the locker room. He knew that the lull of the valley sometimes put them into too much of a false sense of security. Fires in the valley didn't happen often, but they did, and now they had to be ready to deal with whatever was waiting for them in the fastest yet calmest manner possible.

"Ink!" He called the Arson dog who stood up immediately upon hearing Jackson's voice. She clearly wasn't used to the serious mood either, but she got the message and her claws clicked on linoleum as they headed over to the truck and she hopped up with the firefighters. The drive obviously was now long but they could see the Spiral of fire that spewed from the left side of the building. Jackson could smell the scent of gasoline, and his thoughts were only confirmed by the low growling of his canine companion. "It's a gas fire!" He called to the others, at the moment wanting to mask the fact that it was actually very likely Gasoline. Gas was a more common cause of fires in the Ioana area, so it's what he would let the press think for now.

He could hear Jaimie barking about the Deluge gun, and he re-enforced the plan. "This fire's going to fight, use the Deluge gun and not the cross lays!" he called to the others, who began moving and shifting things around like they said. One of the other Firefighters ran up t Jackson. "A young woman who was inside the building says that there were only three people inside and they all got out. She suffered a pretty big burn from touching a doorknob but it's nothing that can't be fixed." He said, motioning to a woman standing with a man and a child, seemingly trying to provide some sort of comfort.

The roar of the Deluge gun coming to life overpowered other sounds for a moment as it blasted an enormous stream of water onto the fire. Inky was still growling, staring at the building as if she wanted to run in an investigate, but wouldn't move without an order. He looked at Jaimie, who was nearest to him. "Looks like it could very well be Arson." He said quietly to him. "Do not let this get out to the media until we've had time to investigate properly."

Jaime was already unwinding the deluge gun when Jackson called out for it, figuring that having it ready just in case was better than waiting on the final order. The fire was burning more and more of the library every second, and all it would take was one stray ember catching on a building close by and they would have more on their hands than they could handle. Time was the last thing they could afford to waste right now. Some of the other guys rushed to help them, and he let them take over as he rushed over to Jackson to see if anyone was in the building, not having heard the other firefighter over the roar of the fire and the terrified murmuring of the crowd.

The chief announced that it was a gas fire, but Jaime could tell something was off. Inky's hackles were up, and she was growling like she thought someone was coming after the chief. She wouldn't do that if she didn't think that foul play was afoot. Smelling the air, he caught the unmistakable scent of gasoline where he should have smelled the more methane-heavy scent of natural gas if it really was as simple as that. Jackson confirmed his suspicions as he approached, and Jaime's eyes hardened into burnished steel, flashing dangerously. Someone had done this. A person with a punchable face as deliberately set fire to the library with a child inside.

He wanted to fight so much more than fires.

"You got it boss. No one's gonna hear anything from me. But I hope that reporter coming this way can't smell the gasoline." Jaime whispered back, gesturing towards a blonde woman with a note pad, a press pass, and a dangerously curious gleam in her eye descending upon them.

Lydia was in her office, enjoying her morning coffee by her open window, when she had heard some sort of commotion coming from the library. Being a good reporter and a better editor, she decided to scoop her own reporters and get the story herself. It had been too long since she had written her own article, and since all of her lazy, good-for-nothing employees had decided to be late, they could just miss out.

And boy what a story they were missing out on.

When Lydia arrived on the scene, it took her a long moment to process what exactly she was seeing. She had expected an impromptu book fair, at the worst a break in. But what she was seeing? She couldn't have imagined it in her wildest dreams. The library; the one she passed every day on her way home, the one she spent countless hours in pouring over old issues of the Herald from long, long before she owned it; was on fire. She was frozen as she watched a pillar of fire erupt out of the left wing. Her hands shook as she put pencil to paper, barely taking her eyes off of the blaze as she jotted down notes.

She scribbled furiously, noting down pertinent details and filing away things she could add for flair later in the back of her mind. But the fire itself was only half of the story. She needed quotes. She needed information. She cast her eyes around, smirking deviously as her eyes landed on the fire chief. Perfect, he would know almost everything she needed to know, and was more likely to be able to spare a moment than one of his underlings.

"Chief Maddock!" She called, rushing over to him as fast as her heels could carry her. "Lydia Everly with the Ioana Herald, could I have a moment of your time?" She asked, not actually giving him time to answer before she launched into her questions. "Are there any people in the building? What do you think caused the fire?" For a moment, she paused. She didn't know if she should ask the next question that came to mind. It seemed completely out of line to even insinuate that someone could have deliberately done this. But she had to cover all angles, just in case. "Do you suspect foul play?"

Logan ran down Feather Street like he was a track star hoping for the gold. He had never been very athletic, but with the knowledge that Kallie and his son could be in danger, nothing could stop him. He hoped they had gotten out, he hoped they were safe. He couldn’t stop running until he knew they were okay.

A crowd had already started forming at the library, watching the building burn to ash. Logan pushed past them. “Kallie!” he called, looking for her familiar face in the crowd. “Kallie!” Oh Itris, please tell him she wasn’t still inside the building.

Finally, with a feeling of relief, he spotted her off to the side. He immediately ran up to her, wrapping her in his arms. “Oh, Kallie. I saw it on the news. I was so worried about you.” He pulled away, his arms still around her, but now he could see her face. “Where’s Jasper? Is he okay?” he asked. “Please tell me he’s not inside.”

| elliot/Ethereal really | the library | spring 16, Y3 | i came back for 20 minutes for this ok |

Odette had always had a weird sense for knowing when something was going to happen, and it had kept her up today. She was sitting in the main hall of the church, hands clasped, eyes closed, trying to deter the sense of dread that kept building inside her, until she heard yells coming from the main center of the valley. Her eyes shot open. The sense had been right - Odette was never one to run into danger, but if it sounded like multiple shouts - was that the fire station alarm? - she couldn't leave it alone.

She picked up her skirts and ran like her life depended on it.

That was the slight problem with the church - it was a ways out of the main area of Ioana, and Odette was obviously never the most sporty, so she did have to slow down occasionally to get her breath back. But the closer she got, the more she could make out the glowing orange that was telltale of a fire, and her fear only grew. The closer she got and the more she could make out that it was the library, her fear turned into fullblown panic.

Elliot - Oliver - !

Odette's run turned into a sprint, dodging through cobblestone streets to where the library was, terrified that she was going to get there and find that Elliot and Oliver were still stuck inside, that she was going to be left powerless to watch as the entire library went up in flames and the two people she cared for the most were still inside, and she would be uncertain of their future. Itris wouldn't do that to them, would she? To her?

"Let me through!" she all but screamed to the cluster of people, her tiny body pushing as hard as she could to try and find the ones she loved. She could hear crying that sounded like her son - wait - and eventually, when she was through the throng of people, she had to shield her face from the sudden flare of heat that hit her, until she opened her eyes and saw Elliot's back, holding Oliver in his arms, and she nearly burst into tears herself.

No, you need to be strong - you can't be the weak one here -

"Elliot! Oliver!" she cried, running up to him and having to resist the urge to give him a hug. Instead, she frantically started checking them both over for injuries - good thing she always carried a tiny medical kit, in case they were hurt. "Are you okay? What happened?" she asked, looking up at Elliot with wide eyes and faltering. "Elliot?"

Itris, what am I meant to do?

As they stood outside watching the firefighters combat the blaze the roared from their workplace, Kallie didn't know what to say. Her hand had been wrapped in gauze and ointment, the burn would heal in a few days. But as she watched Elliot cradle his child, she knew it wouldn't be as easy for him. She tried to offer comfort as she could, but how was she supposed to say everything was going to be okay when she still wasn't even fully aware of what was going on herself? She was happy that of all things she had decided to leave Jasper at home today, if she hadn't things could have been a lot worse.

She held her hand to Elliot's arm, trying to comfort him and Oliver at the same time, but with words caught in her throat it was hard to do just that. It was then she heard a warm and familiar voice calling her name, and she excused herself from Elliot's side to look around. "Logan?" She called back. He came through the small crowd that had formed on Feather street a moment later, and the moment after that she had been wrapped up in her arms.

"Shh, Shh, I'm okay," She promised him, soothing her unwrapped hand through his hair while he hugged her. When he pulled her away and asked about Jasper, she shook her head. "No, Jasper is at home with my dad." She answered, glancing back at the library. "So he's okay too...but Elliot and Oliver..." She glanced over at them again, noticing that the pink haired priestess was sitting with them now. Instead of speaking, she buried herself against Logan, closing her eyes. She just wanted to go home.

Jackson looked at Jaimie for a moment. The press could think whatever they wanted, but he doubted that they would release statements if they couldn't confirm what they were writing or reporting was true or not. So for now, they could hopefully conduct an investigation in some semblance of peace when the fire was finally out, something the Deluge was working on right now.

But now he heard another voice calling his name over the already amassed chaos for such a small town, and he turned, finding Miss Lydia Everly of the Ioana Harold facing him, a News crew seemingly from Westhaven looking for the same answers she was. Teal eyes looked drowned in thought as he tried to word the answers the best he could. "Anyone who was inside the building managed to evacuate just before we arrived," He answered, though figuring that the people involved had already been overwhelmed enough, he didn't bother to point them out in the growing crowd. "Right now we have reason to believe the cause of the fire is a Gas Leak." he stated smoothly as the crew was slowly starting to bring the fire under control.

When she asked about suspecting foul play, Jackson was tight lipped for a moment as he thought about the weight behind the question. "I can't comment on that at this time, Miss Everly. Not until we can work an investigation into the cause, until it's under control all we can do is hope that it's not." He answered before excusing himself to finish helping his crew.

Elliot A. Mercier
TUESDAY SPRING 16, YEAR THREE • MORNING • SUNNY
"My open window, a dream in the dark. My fingers, your face, a spark, a trace"

Things progressed quickly now. The fire was still ablaze, flames licking at the gaping holes in the masonry where windows used to be, but the fire department were on the scene and doing everything they could. The media had gotten wind of the situation, the Ioana Herald arriving first, followed shortly after by the Westhaven news team who'd probably illegally travelled at high speed to get here so quickly. And now, a crowd was gathering. Villagers from nearby streets came out to onlook as an iconic building went up in flames and looked around for those they knew. Logan came for Kallie and soon Odette was here for him and Oliver.

Elliot was yet to break his silence. He was fixated on the scene, the reflection of the flames in his brown eyes. He continued to hold Oliver, gently rocking him back and forth, but neither of them knew how else to respond. Oliver still cried despite the loving comfort of his father and Elliot still gazed on broken despite feeling Kallie's hand on his upper arm and knowing she was desperate to help but so unsure of what to do.

It was only when Odette arrived that the two now began to respond. Oliver stopped crying, his voice hitched as he screamed out "'Et-te!" That was what made Elliot finally break his gaze with the library to look at Odette. His eyes were the saddest they'd ever been. In that moment, Elliot looked ten years older than he was. He was a broken man now.

"We're... we're okay,"
he spoke, his voice nothing more than a whisper. "We got out quickly. I... I don't know what happened."

Elliot's voice quivered. "I... I don't... know..."

Logan didn’t want to let go of Kallie. Horrible thoughts had been circling his mind as he had run from Chestnut to Feather Street. He was afraid of losing his family so soon after starting it. He didn’t know what he would do if anything happened to Kallie or Jasper.

He found Kallie shortly after arriving at the scene, wrapping her in his arms. She smelled of smoke but she seemed unharmed for the most part. He sighed in relief when she said Jasper was at home. “Oh, praise Itris,” he said. He was happy that today was the day she had left Jasper at home. He looked to Elliot and his own son. They had a woman there comforting them now.

Kallie buried herself against him and he wrapped his arms tighter around her. He felt like he could finally relax now, knowing that his family was safe from harm. He looked back to the library, the firefighters still battling the flames. He looked back to Kallie, kissing the top of her head. “I’m so happy you’re safe,” he whispered.

Dean is dressed today in a simple white button-down shirt and light-colored slacks with a pair of dark-brown leather chukkas. He has a gray backpack on his back that appears about half-filled.

Dean had scarcely been in town for three days when one of the most tumultuous events in the Valley's recent history occurred. He smelled it before he saw it. After making his way around town on foot, buying minor items he would need for his extended stay at the inn, the stinging sensation of burning architecture greeted his nasal passages. He looked to his left and saw the hellfire pouring out of the Valley library. He had to jump into action. He pulled out a small pocket spiral notebook and a pen.

It was not long until he saw Lydia at the scene, his new boss at the Herald. This was his first real writing gig so he knew he couldn't afford to slack on such a big story. Lydia was already making her way to the fire chief so Dean knew he would best serve the Herald by coming at the story from a different angle. Then he remembered.

He took his small backpack off, quickly removing the straps from his shoulders, and firmly placed it on the sidewalk near the road. Dean pulled out his black camera and took the lens out of its small compartment. The photography classes he took in college were perhaps not a total waste of time after all. After loading a frssh film cannister, he fished a cigarette out from his trousers pocket and lit it with a match from his other. He took a deep drag as he held his camera and began to frame a shot.

Dean took several different shots on his camera, initial ones of smoke billowing out of the old library windows. He made his way to the ground and took several shots of the blond fireman he heard the chief once refer to as "Jaime" when he walked close to one of the parked firetrucks. Some of the shots of Jaime looked particularly heroic. He was already coated in sweat and a simple look at his face could show he was giving it his all. With some luck, one of the photos of the fiery building or of the young fireman lugging around the huge deluge gun would make an appearance in tomorrow's paper.

When finally satisfied with his photographs, Dean re-inserted his camera into his bag and again got his notebook ready. He had to get at least one good interview out of this. As he flicked his cigarette ash onto the sidewalk, he turned his head and saw a group of three across from the library: a man, a woman, and a child. The man appeared particularly distressed. His face was crimson and it was evident he was crying not long ago. The woman close to him appeared almost equally disturbed. The girl did not seem as devastated but definitely had the appearance of something not being quite right. As he made his way to the trio, he could smell smoke on the man. He heard the woman refer to him as Elliot. Dean wondered if he had some relation to the library. Perhaps he had a story.

"Hello there. I am Dean Foxwell with the Ioana Herald and I was wondering if any of you had any insight toward the incident here wth the library. Any information would be greatly appreciated." The words came out of his mouth in near breathless precision. He was nervous as hell and feared coming off as insensitive; however, he needed information. To try to lighten things a bit, he told the group of three, "If you'd like we can go somewhere to sit down and maybe get something cold to drink. It's all on me." He wondered if other reporters had to worry about being able to afford a few cans of pop for their interviewees. He chalked it up to humble beginnings and hoped the man and woman would not receive his gestures poorly.

NOTES

Spring 16th
Fiona was at the shop, she didn’t hear or see anything, that was until she saw several villagers running towards the library.

”What the…” she spoke before stepping outside only to see the smoke coming from behind the buildings, clearly something caught fire. Lady was besides Fiona and began to bark and become agitated. At first Fiona decided not to go, how could she? She would just stand in the way, she would be useless in a situation like that.

Suddenly Lady ran towards the fire, it was only then that Fiona remembered that Jackson was a firefighter, he was probably there fighting the flames. Fiona ran after her dog.

Reaching the location of the fire Fiona could see the Library was burning. ”Lady stay still!” Fiona commanded and Lady obeyed, but it was still too agitated. Fiona kept trying to see over the heads, but all she could see was heads. After a few minutes of seeing nothing she decided to go see if the victims needed anything and motioned Lady to follow.

”Does anyone need anything?” she asked, wondering if they needed anything, Lady sat and looked at the people.

NOTES

Spring 16th
Andy had arrived to the scene earlier, she asked the people to remain behind the yellow line but as usual the crowd was trying to see what was happening and it was becoming an hindrance to everyone trying to work to put out the fire. ”This is going to be a tough day…” she thought to herself as she kept pushing people away, somehow these villagers were more worried about knowing what was happening to gossip than to let the firemen put out the fire.

She watched as the chief spoke to this other woman, who seemed too curious about the whole event.

The woman approached the chief of the firefighters. ”Can we talk later about all this?” she asked him. She didn’t know him very well, their paths crossed a few times but she never engaged in a conversation with him, or anyone at the station, that was her brother’s job. ”Since you’re a fireman I want to know what you think about this, but away from prying eyes and ears…” she spoke as she watched the crowd.

Andy circled the line looking at everyone, she was curious to know why a library would catch fire, after all it didn’t make sense unless someone was playing with matches or a lighter.

| elliot/Ethereal // dean/Overscore | the library | spring 16, Y3 | sup |

Odette's heart broke inside hearing Oliver scream for her, the innocent cry of a child so young who had no idea what was happening but knew it was bad, knew that it was hurting his daddy, and was so aware that what was happening was wrong and didn't know what to do. Odette felt as helpless as he did, her coat being clung to around her shoulders as she looked at them with wide, terrified eyes, because at that moment, she too had no idea what she could do. Even for Oliver, who was still sobbing into his father's chest. She hated feeling like this.

She didn't want to look at the library. She knew what it would look like, and seeing it would turn her into a quivering mess - and Elliot didn't need that right now.

It was his look that spurred her into action. Odette shrugged her coat off - she didn't know what on earth inspired her to do this, considering Elliot was a good foot taller than her and it wouldn't fit - and stretched up on her tiptoes to wrap it around his shoulders, since they had no foil or blankets that they usually had for trauma victims. Or whatever it was - Odette never paid attention to the technicalities of it. She just did what she felt was right.

"Shh, it's okay," she whispered to him, her hand reaching to give Oliver's hair a comforting tussle. Right now, she had to be the strong one for the both of them - she had to do what she could. "You're safe now, and that's what matters the most - we can work out what happened later, okay? Stay with me tonight, you can have my bed - I have spare blankets and everything, I'll take care of everything -" she was babbling on, but she was trying to offer Elliot whatever comfort she could. He and Oliver always had a home with her.

Odette startled when an unfamiliar voice came to her ears, and she stiffened somewhat when she realised it was a reporter of some sort. She didn't want to interfere when it was clearly a question directed for Elliot, but she doubted, knowing Elliot, he wanted to deal with it right now. "I don't think now is the time, sir," she addressed him somewhat sharply, for Odette, but she was on edge too. She glanced up at Elliot. "Unless you don't mind, of course..." she trailed off. She didn't want to speak for him, but she just wanted to get him somewhere warm and safe and away from the horrors of today.
