Outgoing Mail, Spring 4th

Sawyer hesitated for a moment before slipping the letter to his brother into the mailbox. He was unsure if he would ever get a letter back. His brother had probably moved years ago, and even if he hadn't, there was no guarantee that Cal would even want to be in contact with him. If his letter came back to him, or if no letter came back at all, he wouldn't be surprised. Sawyer had considering trying to call Cal, but he didn't know if he'd even be able to do anything but hang up on the off chance Cal's number was still good. A letter was easier. He could just write whatever and forget about it for a week or two.

He stayed still for a moment, staring at the mailbox, secretly praying to deities he didn't believe in that the letter would find his brother and that their relationship could be prepared. He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, under eye circles looking darker than average. He sniffed and turned, holding back tears that he didn't want to admit to himself he could cry. He jammed a cigarette into his mouth and fumbled with the lighter for a moment. He cursed after it finally lit and dragged the smoke down deep into his lungs. At least he tried.

Incoming Mail, Spring 12th

When Sawyer got off his shift for the evening, he was alerted to having a letter. Assuming it was just junk mail, he grabbed it without looking and went to his room. He tossed it on the bedside table and forgot about it until after he'd showered and changed. He sat down on the edge of the bed and grabbed it. When he saw the return address, his hands started shaking. His stomach knotted up and he was almost scared to open it. He sat it down, went outside and had a cigarette, then came back inside and picked it up. His hands shook a little as he pried open the envelop, terrified to see what his brother had written back.

Spoiler

Sawyer glanced at his clock. He couldn't call today. Not after receiving the letter so soon. Promising himself he'd call tomorrow, he put the letter back into the envelope and laid it on the bed next to him.
