She always made a point of getting ready before she went out - it was too risky to try and go to the police station really early to fix her appearance, because there was too much of a risk of someone walking in and catching her. After all, she woke up early enough in the mornings to properly prepare for the day, especially since she usually made a point of walking with Wesley to work since they lived in the same apartment block and usually worked around the same time. And out of the entirety of those she had met in the police force, she certainly preferred Wes - he didn't have the same brashness or rudeness as his cousin, and wasn't as loud as Sadie, either. They got on better than the others, at least.

She rolled out of bed early to shower, and slipped on her trousers before she stood in front of the mirror as per usual to bind her chest as she did every day. Riley recalled the first few days that she started doing it, and it was uncomfortable to begin with, especially as she got older, but as she got older she also became more experienced with the whole thing, and now it was like second nature to her.

She hummed as she retrieved her usual binding tape and the like, not really paying much attention to her surroundings as it was her home - she was safe here, and there was no reason for her to be on guard. But in a very un-Riley-like manner, she had forgotten to lock the door the night before - letting anyone coming by to come in, and she probably wouldn't notice.

Wes was so excited about having a walking partner again. Admittedly, a little too excited. He'd even gone and gotten up extra early to grab the coffees ahead of time. He carried both drinks up the stairs carefully, until he arrived at the right numbered door. He read the silver, metal digits over a few times, just to make sure he'd gotten it right. When he was sure, he knocked. Which wasn't an easy task while balancing two steaming, hot beverages in his hands. He used his chest and his forearm to hold them close to his body so they wouldn't spill. When where was no answer, he knocked again. Maybe a little too eagerly. This time, the door creaked open. Wes took a step back in shock, thinking he had possibly knocked as Riley was coming out. When he realized this wasn't the case, he stared puzzled at the door that was now ajar.

"Riley?"

When there was no answer again, he began to worry. Unlocked door. No Seta in sight. His mind began to wander. Of course, to the worst scenario possible. Was there a break in? Should he call the cops? Should he just go upstairs and get Ender now? No... probably not. Ender didn't seem to like Detective Seta, so he could cross that option out. Wes bit his lip as he thought. Maybe Riley had just slept through his alarm? He pushed the door gently with his hip so he could peer inside. When he was fully inside, he pushed the door closed with his backside. Now that he was in the apartment he didn't really have a plan. He stood awkwardly in the middle of the living room, both hands still tightly wrapped around their drinks. He set them down on the counter and began tiptoeing around. What if there was an intruder? Were they still inside? Wes crept around the corner, his eyes fluttered across something that was hopefully a good sign. There was a light coming from underneath the bathroom door. Wes inched closer. But...

What if the killer was chopping Riley up in the bathtub? He'd seen that in a movie once. The bathtub was a good place to chop up a body because there was a drain in there, and water too. His mind was spinning with macabre thoughts.

In most cases it would not necessarily be a good idea to bust through someones bathroom door, especially after entering the home unannounced. But Basco's weren't exactly known for their ability to make logical decisions. But if there was a murder happening right now, maybe he could save his friend from meeting such a horrific demise. He figured there was about a fifty-fifty chance that Riley was being chopped into Detective soup.

Wes didn't think, he just acted. Suddenly the door flung open and he was standing there with a wild look in his eyes. When he saw Seta standing there in front of the mirror, alive, he smiled thoughtfully. He was alone. There was no killer, or at least not in this bathroom. Just the two of them staring at one another. Riley in confusion, and Wes beaming with relief now that he wasn't knee deep in a crime scene.

He was about to say hello when his brown eyes swept across the backside and chest of the other man. A bandage? Seta seemed to be struggling with it. "Oh! Are you hurt? What happened?" He didn't wait for an answer. Now he was next to Riley 'helping'. He'd taken some first aid classes before, he knew what to do. "I got it, I'll just-" Wes paused. Something was not right here. His hand had accidentally come across something that felt peculiar. Riley had a very squishy chest. What a strange injury? He squinted curiously, his palm gently caressing the area once more. "Oh?" At first he had no reaction. He had never touched a boob before, so the fact that he was touching one now hadn't exactly hit him yet. His eye brow raised suspiciously, he put both hands back down at his sides. Now that he was looking at the other man and the horror across his face, things started to make sense. Suddenly Wes shrieked in terror. He wasn't afraid of Riley, or the fact that Riley had breasts, but more so at the fact that he'd just groped them.

"I'M SO SORRY DETECTIVE SETA!" He covered both eyes quickly and turned fast to head out the door. Which proved to be difficult with both eyes closed. Instead of making his exit, his forehead clunked loudly against the side of the door that he'd left cracked only moments ago. "Ow..."

Looking back on this event, in the future, Riley would come to laugh at the entire thing and then cry, because after all, how would someone, who had spent so many years carefully crafting this personality and guise for everyone to look upon while she hid the truth away, want it to come crumbling apart in such a manner?

Riley enjoyed walking with Wes. Compared to his, quite frankly, despicable cousin, who she had built up a healthy dislike for alonside his dislike for her, it was somewhat refreshing to walk with someone that didn't call her short, or laugh at her, or poke fun behind her back. Wes was a refreshing breeze in an otherwise typical environment that she had been used to dealing with since she was in her teens, and considering she had never had someone to walk with to work before either, it taught her a few things about actually being able to socialise with people. Riley kept many people at arm's length, that was for certain, and it was no different with Wes, but her words to him had never made him recoil and flee like it had so many people.

It was odd.

She was so absorbed in what she was doing that she didn't hear the knock at the door that came twice, or the sound of the door opening, or the sound of Wes calling her name - when Riley was in that zone that she was, she didn't pay attention to what was going on around her because the last thing she wanted was to slip up, and then crack a rib or something from tying the binders too tight. So she didn't know Wes was even in her apartment until the bathroom door was open and she nearly dropped the binder in horror as her blue eyes turned and stared at him - this was the most feminine he was ever going to see her, without her hat and her uniform and her binder, and that was the scariest bit until he said that he was going to help her tie it up.

"No!" she all but screamed at him, but it was too late at that point, because she felt his hands around her chest attempting to get to the binder, and then hands on her well, boobs - and she froze.

By the time he was stumbling away and practically shrieking, she shrieked too - because the both of them had no idea what was going on and Riley was painfully, painfully aware that she had been exposed, in both senses of the word. She was panicking, despite herself, to find her loose shirt that she wore to bed, and threw it over her torso, because right now Wes had smacked his head on her doorframe and she needed to look at that first.

Ignoring the fact that she was bright red in the face and the neck and she was wearing nothing but her trousers and a plain T-shirt, she spun Wes around to look at the head injury he'd probably just sustained himself. "You utter fool," she scolded, dampening her towel and dabbing it against his head. "I appreciate you covering your eyes, but don't make it a bother for both of us by cracking your head open. It's only bruised, though." When she was satisfied with sorting out his bruise, she ducked her head away in embarrassment.

"Can you go and sit down outside, please? I'll only be a few minutes," she pretty much whispered, her voice choking as she tried not to burst into tears. Was this the end of it? Was Wes going to go and tell the entire department, and she was going to go back to being Riley, the short stuff girl who was doing her best at playing detective? Was this it? What a damn way to go, she thought bitterly, tears rolling down her face as she scrambled for the binder and stared at him expectantly, not bothering to wipe her face of the tear tracks they were now leaving, waiting for him to go outside and wait, or say something. Whichever came first.

When Riley brought a towel to his forehead, he winced with pain. Already he could feel the knot growing where his face had kissed the door. He felt like such an idiot. For many reasons right now. Obviously he wouldn't be telling anyone about what had just happened, if he could even remember. But it was going to be hard to forget, let alone hide, the giant black and blue bruise on his melon. Wes was a horrible liar. He'd be able to leave out the part about where he'd received the bruise, but not how. How as in, colliding with an open door. It was believable, he was a known klutz already. This wasn't the first time this had happened. Probably wouldn't be the last..

"Can you go and sit down outside, please? I'll only be a few minutes," He nodded, holding the towel against his own head now. He made a quick exit, this time minding the door on his way out. When he was in the living room he felt some relief. He still hadn't quite come to terms with just went down. In fact, he was still trying to work that out when Riley came out of the bathroom. He was visibly upset, Wes smiled sympathetically when he saw him. "Ahh, jeeze. I'm sorry man. I didn't mean to hurt you if I did." The whole male, female thing hadn't registered. He still saw Detective Seta as a man, even after seeing, or rather touching, what he'd touched.

"I uh... got you a coffee." Wes laughed nervously, his cheeks dimpled kindly and made him look sweet, even with the large dent in his head.

She didn't mean to cause him pain, but the only way that bruise was going to not swell to gargantuan sizes was if she got something cold on it to prevent the swelling. It was going to hurt like anything, but that was the best she could do under the circumstances. When Wes left and she shut the bathroom door behind him to continue what she had been doing beforehand, she was struggling not to dissolve into tears over the fact that her career as an actual respected detective was over. Clearly she didn't know Wes as well as she thought she did, becuase she immediately thought that he was going to tell everyone as soon as they got to work.

Maybe that was just her being horrifically pessimistic, as well. She was like that.

She quickly finished binding her chest and washed her face to rid herself of the tear tracks and the red face, before going outside to confront what she expected to be a ton of questions and demands for explanations. She was prepared for that.

What she wasn't prepared for was an apology and him telling her that he had bought them coffee in advance - was that what he had come in for? She realised it was wrong of her to have left the door unlocked - but she just blinked at him as if she wasn't registering what he was saying. "I - it's okay, but - you don't want explanations?" she practically spluttered out, her composure practically out of the window at this point. She thought she had people so easily sussed out, so easily read, but this wasn't what she expected.

She glanced at the feet and then at the coffee, reaching for it and taking a sip - black and two sugars, exactly as she always had it. Had he taken notice of that? "Thanks for bringing the coffees up," she mumbled. Riley had no idea how she was meant to act right now - it depended on Wes' answer to her previous question, really.

"I - it's okay, but - you don't want explanations?" Wes was not sure what he was on about. He blinked idly a few times while his mind struggled to fit together what was still bothering Riley. "Uhhh...", he scratched his head, careful not to touch the area that was throbbing with a dull pain. "You mean about the door? I guess? Why was it unlocked?" Wes cocked his head, hoping that he was on the same page finally. His vision had mostly returned now, and he was relieved that there was no blood involved in this fiasco. Speaking of, he hadn't seen any blood on Riley either, which brought his mind back to the bandages around his chest.

"Or wait, are you talking about your injury?" he looked on, his face laced with concern. "What happened?"

For a moment, she thought that she had somehow managed to escape completely unscatched. Wesley, poor, sweet Wesley, with his innocence and confusion, seemed to have no idea what was going on, and perhaps she could get away without saying a damn thing about what she had been doing in the bathroom, and he would be none the wiser. No one would have to know and she could go back to their usual routine. Perhaps she had been the one to mess up by asking if he wanted an explanation. She could have got away with it.

Riley wanted to punch herself in the face.

"Oh, that was me just being forgetful, I suppose. I was pretty exhausted last night," she said as dismissively as she could, before her heart sunk at the mention of her 'injury'. There was nothing she could pass off with that one - how was she meant to pass it off? Could she even pass it off as an injury? There was no scarring, no blood or anything for her to even make reference to.

Riley gave up. There was no escaping this one. This was her own fault.

Her face flushed bright red and she looked at the floor, trying to swallow the lump in her chest. "I - it's not an injury, Wes, you weren't - you weren't meant to see that. I was... was binding my chest," she mumbled, all of her usual composure and confidence and everything else she brought to her job gone. She didn't want to admit she had been lying, but she figured even as dense as he was sometimes, he would pick that up. Her fists clenched and she trembled as she tried her best not to cry.

(Goddammit, Riley, pull yourself together. Don't be a girl about this.)

When Riley admitted to forgetting to lock the door, Wesley's face became very serious. "Makes sense... but.", he took the damp rag off his face, so Seta could see just how much he meant this, "You should probably lock your door next time. There are some weird people in this city." He nodded to himself matter-of-factly. Obviously a detective would already know that, but he wasn't exactly thinking clearly right now.

Now Riley was getting upset again. Wes looked at the clock behind him on the wall. His vision was a bit too blurry still to make out the time, but he knew they'd have to go soon to make it work on schedule. He was going to remind Detective Seta of this, but it didn't seem like a good time. Riley was getting all red, and trying to explain something Wes didn't really comprehend in his current state of mind. He just nodded along politely as the other man spoke, doing his best to show compassion. Chest binding. Wes heard the phrase and something, finally clicked.

"Oh.", he said calmly.

Riley still looked like he was going to fall apart any second. "I... think I understand now. You don't have to explain." Wes stood, and went to his friend's side. He placed a hand gently on the other man's shoulder and spoke quietly and smooth. "I'm not going to tell anyone, you can trust me." He smiled reassuringly, "Nothing has changed. You are still Riley Seta the detective."

Maybe, if she hadn't completely lost her composure, she could have made something up about a cracked rib or something along those lines and everything would have been A-OK, she wouldn't have had to worry about the truth. But when she was flustered, as rare as it was, the rarity of that event basically made it impossible for her to think clearly most of the time. It was easier for her to just come out with it at that point, because a fabricated lie would look more fabricated than it actually was.

She nodded mutely. Hopefully it would just be passed off as Riley being tired, because that wasn't really the real issue here at the moment.

But Wes' reaction was beyond anything that she expected. Even with tears welling up in her eyes, because she was expecting to have to explain all of her reasoning and everything else behind what she was doing, Wes didn't seem to expect anything like that. She felt like more of a child than ever, but Wes was reassuring her that he didn't need explanations, that everything was okay and nothing had changed. Blue eyes looked up at him, and she bit her lip. "Are you sure? You won't tell the chief?" she asked, more concerned about that because she knew Ender would give her pure hell, and she wasn't ready to deal with that.

Either way, she was glad that Wes existed.

"Of course not.", he said with a nod. Wes and Ender were close, but they didn't tell each other everything. Their relationship was by blood, not by choice. He did admire the man, but he wouldn't be the first person he'd run to if he needed to talk. Plus, Wes was a very good secret keeper. He knew a lot of secrets, but they remained locked away in that part of his mind. A vault of all sorts. Some things were small, others were big. But he kept it all to himself. He patted the place on his shoulder his hand had been resting. "You don't have to explain yourself to anyone. You know that right?", he noticed his own watch now, since his wrist was angled now at eye level. "Oh, but. We do have to get going now don't we? That's one thing we would have to explain to Ender, why we are both late." He smiled warmly, and walked back around the couch to make his way to the door. "I'll be outside, when you're ready we'll go, okay?", and with that, he made his exit. He figured the other man would probably need a few extra minutes to get himself together, without Wesley looming around.

When he got out to the hallway, he sighed with relief. He'd been stumbling on a lot of people's skeletons lately. He was beginning to wonder how much more he could take.
