Scout hadn't been feeling much better since the day she had confessed to Wesley what had been going on. In fact if anything she had been getting more letters. Her drawer at work had been re purposed, the lock box now hiding the secret from Oliver. It had been hard for her to maintain a straight face, and she wished whoever was doing this would leave her alone,or rethink what they were doing, but that hadn't been the case. How long was this supposed to keep going for?

But today she wanted to do something different. Instead of studying, or spending time fretting over it at home, she had decided that it would be more beneficial to her to her to go do something. And so she had asked Wesley had come to the Aquarium with her. Sure by now she had been there over 1000 times already, seen what there was to see, there had even been a time where Oliver had rented it out for a romantic night beneath the glow of the soft aquarium lights. But she never got tired of it, and it was the one place that never failed to make her happy.

She would have just walked to the place with Wes considering they would have been coming from the same place, but she had to run an errand for Lucy before she went, and so she had given Wesley a time to meet her there. They hadn't been spending too much time together lately, each having their own suddenly busy lives to live, but he had enjoyed coming here with her before. And it would be nice to relive some older memories, and make some new ones.

She stood at the entrance to the Aquarium, tapping the toe of her shoe against the ground as she shifted a bag against her other shoulder. Wesley wasn't too late, but she couldn't wait to head inside.

Wes had taken it upon himself to suddenly become very mindful when it came to the mail. Everyday, he offered to run and fetch it for Janet. It was no chore, it was the least he could do for letting him stay. Each time he'd rifle through the pile, picking out anything suspicious to be examined further. They weren't hard to miss. The notes were usually sloppy, yet harsh. He'd read them, and crumple them till they were illegible. After that he'd shove them deep into his pockets, until he could toss them out at work where no one would ever go looking. He couldn't get them all, and he knew that. But if he could keep his friend from seeing at least one of these in the mailbox, it was worth it.

So today was no different. He'd gotten up a little early to beat everyone else to the box. It was quite easy to sneak past them all during the early hours. He'd be on his way to the station or school at this time anyway, so it wasn't too suspicious. When he opened the box, he peaked inside. Today there wasn't anything nasty among the bills and circulars, so he left it all behind. He figured if he took the mail upstairs everyday, Scout would catch on to what he was doing. He didn't like to lie, so he figured he had to be discreet enough to never be questioned in the first place.

After he'd finished running around the city a bit to do some work he'd promised his band-mate, he started towards the aquarium. He'd told Jaime he'd hang flyers for an open audition. They were in desperate need in a third musketeer for their little jam sessions. The trumpet and the violin didn't always sound so soothing together, believe it or not. As he walked up to the entrance, he waved at his friend. She looked better, but not a peace. He wondered if she'd gotten hold of a letter some other way this morning. He studied her carefully as he finally walked up to her. His lips curled into a smile when they were finally face to face. "Hey! Ready?" Wes bumped her hip gently with his own. "If we hurry we can watch the trainer feed the stingrays their lunch." The juvenile stingrays happened to be his favorite. They were like the puppies of the sea. You were allowed to pet the young ones with no danger, and in fact they liked it when you did. There was one in particular that nearly jumped from the tank to be caressed by any passing patron of the aquarium.

Wesley didn't take a long time to show up after she had first arrived, though Scout had to admit to herself that she was always a little impatient when it came to the Aquarium. She loved it, even though she had seen most of the exhibits 1000 times. The spring hadn't been so easy so far but today she was going to hang out with Wes, and that was exciting enough, especially with how busy they had both been lately, with both school, jobs, and personal affairs to worry about, but today it was just about them and the aquarium.

She smiled and nodded as she returned the small display of affection. "Totally." Her smile affirmed that and she lead their way inside. "You know for an Oceanic Pancake, it's sometimes hard for people to remember they can actually be really dangerous." It was true, while Sting Rays didn't actively seek people out and go for the kill, they sometimes managed to feel threatened enough to sting, and in the right situation it could be fatal.

"I'm just glad trimming their barbs doesn't hurt them. The ones at this aquarium seem to really like getting pet." She laughed, nudging Wesley in the side. "Do you remember that one Sting Ray the last time we were here that couldn't seem to let you go?" She asked, taking a left turn as if she knew exactly where they were headed, probably because she did. "I was pretty sure if they couldn't potentially grow to be over 200 pounds you would have asked to take it home."

Scout always had tons of knowledge to drop about sea animals, but these facts seem to multiply exponentially once they were actually inside. Maybe it was the atmosphere. The mere sight of a fish of any sort suddenly brought back all the info, and she just had to share or she was like a balloon about to burst. Wes didn't mind. He was a sucker for statistics and data of all varieties. He loved to read, he'd read anything. Anything he could get his hands on, and hanging out with Scout was like having the whole giant book of oceanography stuck on play so he wouldn't have to read. It was charming, really. Quirky even.

When they got to the touch tank, Wes leaned over the clear, blue water with wide eyes. He knew he could recognize his little buddy right away. The stingray he was searching for wasn't like the others, not to Wes anyway. He had speckles in an complex pattern that he'd gone and memorized. An easy task for a person who came here as often as they did. When the little ray swam up to the side of the glass and gave a little wave, Wes nearly squealed with joy. "Giovanniiiii.", he cooed, touching its back gently with the pad of his pointer and middle fingers. It felt wet, and smooth underneath his rough finger tips. When Scout looked at him curiously, he laughed, but didn't take his hand from the tank. "Oh..", he smiled at her now, his eyes crinkling with joy. "I named him that because he looks like a little ravioli." He nodded sternly. "A sea ravioli."

The touch tank hadn't been too far in, after all it was something they used to draw visitors attention and make them stay until they were hungry, which cleverly enough led them to getting food in the cafe. It was a very sneaky marketing strategy, but they had to make their money somehow. Walking side by side with Wesley they made their way over hurriedly, and Scout noticed Wesley was very focused, searching for something without any sort of hesitation. She looked over to Wesley as he squealed out a name she hadn't heard before, and she smiled at him as she noticed the little ray that he had been referring to. Despite what a lot of people thought, even Sea Creatures had friends they could remember, and Wesley seemed to be one of those for this little ray. "Hey there Giovanni." She greeted, as if she had been calling the little pancake by the name since before Wes had mentioned it.

Sea Ravioli.

Scout smiled at him, nodding in kind. "Myliobatoidei. That's what scientists know them by." She answered as she looked into the water, the little sting ray clearly enjoying the attention that it was getting from Wesley. "But I think Sea Ravioli is a lot less of a mouthful." Unless he tried to eat it, something Scout wouldn't have highly recommended. She reached out and touched Giovanni's back, enjoying the smooth feel of the Sea Creature's skin under her fingertips. "You can tell he remembers you, he raced over here. I guess it's a good thing his eyes are on top of his head and not underneath."

She jumped, backing into Wesley as another Sting ray rammed into her hand looking for attention. Clearly shocked, she held her hand not covered in water to her chest. "Maybe we should call that one Torpedo." She mentioned, pointing out the one that had scared her as she readjusted herself again. "I like Giovanni better, much calmer." Despite her words she reached out and the String Ray came back, allowing her to stroke the top of its body. "I think Sting Rays might be one of the calmest ocean creatures ever, next to Manatees anyway. Look at these guys, they don't seem to have a problem if they were to spend the rest of their lives in this touch tank." She said as the one she was petting swam away to gain attention from someone else. "Though I can't really blame them, it must be nice when your only concern is who is going to pet you next." She said, ruffling Wesley's hair with her dry hand as an example.

He blinked when she stated the scientific name. Even if he could pronounce that, he still liked his term better. "When you become a Marine Biologist you'll have to add my contribution to the book." He nodded. "Right under... whatever you just said. My...lio...bah...", he gave up. "...aka Sea ravioli.", Wes added while using the whole back of his hand to stroke the length of Giovanni's silky body.

Suddely another curious little ray was begging for their attention. Scout stumbled back, but luckily Wes had been grounded enough to stop her from falling. "Maybe we should call that one Torpedo." While she gained her footing, he watched the ray return to seek their affection. Now Scout was petting it, and dropping more deep sea knowledge. When she ruffled his hair he smiled fondly, and dried his own hands on his shirt. "Bye Giovanni." he said thoughtfully, even waving to his slippery friend. They could wave back after all.

After another moment of watching it swim, he turned back to Scout eagerly. "Penguins?" That was their usual route anyway. All of the interactive stuff was in the front, and after that the huge tank with her all time favorite animal, the Whale. They saved the best for last on purpose, but until then...

"I fucking love penguins. It looks like they have tiny suits on." Wes basically shouted while pointing to one in particular, as if they didn't all look the same.

"Myliobatoidei." Scout repeated with a laugh. She didn't expect people to be able to pronounce the scientific names of most of these creatures when she had to pace herself in order to say them herself. She gently nudged Wesley's shoulder. "It's okay, we can just keep calling them sea raviolis or pancakes like we used to call them in High School." she answered. She and Wesley had a deep past when it came to not calling the Sting Ray by its real name. She watched him as he pet Giovanni with his entire hand. If he could have, Wesley might have even taken the Sting Ray home, that was about how much she could see he liked him.

Thankfully Wes catching her had saved her from a tumble, and she straightened herself out before giving the little Sting Ray the attention it had wanted in the first place. She smiled as it swam off, Giovanni following shortly after. She smiled at Wes as he wiped his hands dry. "It's funny you know, you can make friends with anything." She said, pinching his cheek fondly. "Anywhere, where to?" She asked. She knew what the answer was, but decided to ask anyway, and she grinned.

"Sure, I haven't seen them in a while!" She responded as they started to head in that direction. It was busy today, one of the best places in the city for a fun outing. "You know the last time I was here with Oliver, one of the Penguins got out. They put a large rock too close to one of the edges, so I guess he took it as a good chance to explore." She explained, remembering she had taken care in bringing it back while Oliver was skeptical about her touching it.

She laughed when Wesley expressed enthusiasm for the Penguins. "They do look like adorable little businessmen." She laughed, imagining a penguin doing the work that Oliver did, sitting in an office calling on his Penguin assistant. It was a funny image, so she was quick to share it with Wes. The Penguins waddled their way, walking past them in a little line between a rock grove. She leaned over and whispered to Wes. "Do you think they're on their way to the office?"

After Scout shared her story about the penguin on the run, he laughed. Now he was watching them curiously, wondering himself if they were plotting their next escape. They seemed so innocent, so oblivious. But apparently they had a lot more sense than he had given them credit for. He thought about seeing a penguin making its way down the crowded streets of the city. People trying to chase it down and grab hold of it only for it to slip from their grasp and waddle hurriedly away. This day dream had him smiling to himself like a fool. Wes had a very colorful imagination. He often shared it with Scout, because she never judged him for being... him.

In fact, she was now telling him about her own silly penguin scenario she'd just conjured up. He knew he loved her for a reason.

"Do you think they're on their way to the office?"

He smirked. His eyes rolled upwards in thought, a clean indication that he was thinking of something stupid to say or do. Honestly, he was just imagining the penguins in the same way she was now. Sitting around a desk holding a meeting, wearing little bow-ties and honking their little penguin beaks as they all argued. "Yes.", he finally answered. Now he was the one leaning over to whisper something into her ear, "Hey, how does a penguin build a house?" When she looked at him, he could barely hold it together for the punchline. "It...", he paused, but a small, sharp laugh escaped, "Igloos it together." He held onto the barrier that was keeping anymore penguin prison breaks from occurring for support as he finally cracked, and doubled over in a fit of laughter.

Being with Wesley was always calming for her. Whether they were laughing or crying or making fun of the cheesiest movies, she always found herself in a much better mood because of it. Here with Wesley she could escape from the pains of the letters she had been receiving, and not have to imagine what might happen if one of the letters held truth. Here with Wes she could just be herself, and that was fine with him. "I knew it," She said when he answered her question, watching them go. "I bet they use rocks as the round table." She said, mock suspicion in her voice as a few of the penguins slipped into a little rock tunnel that led into the water.

She felt Wes' hold on her shoulder and was about to ask what he wanted when he started to whisper something into his ear. "Wesley Basco don't you dare," she warned, but despite that her best friend had continued the joke anyway. Scout pulled back and looked at him, but found herself trying not to laugh and struggling to keep a straight face. But when that failed she started laughing right along with him. "You are such a dork!" she said with a gentle punch to his shoulder, wiping tears from her eyes as another Penguin slipped into the cave.

"See? He thought it was so bad that now he has to go swim off the same for you." She said as he slooshed into the darkness. Though the way she had been laughing had told a different story. "Wes why are you like this?" she hugged him briefly before letting him go and looking over the banister. One of the Penguins had stopped, and was looking at them, almost expectantly. And it was looking right at Wesley. Scout raised an eyebrow as she leaned on the rail. "Either he's judging you for your punny sins, or he wants something, take your pick." She said as she nodded at the small tuxedo-ed creature.

He was so happy to see Scout smiling. It had been a rough couple days, but right now she seemed to be enjoying herself despite that. She hugged him, and he squeezed her back a little tighter than usual. Afterwards, she brought his attention back to fleeing penguins. Her jab at his sense of humor made him laugh lightly. His joke had been pretty bad. But one little guy had stuck around, "Maybe he wants an encore?", Wes teased. He pushed himself closer to the enclosure, and attempted to make direct eye contact with the curious, tiny penguin.

"Why do penguins carry fish in their beaks?", he asked the bird. He waited a moment, side eyeing Scout to see her reaction. "... because they don't have any pockets.", he said with a stupid grin. He bowed triumphantly, as if he'd been on a stage this whole time. "Thank you, thank you. I'll be here all week."

Apparently the black and white spectator, didn't care for his second joke. Because now it too, had slid away down the rock on its belly to take a swim. "Oof, tough crowd.", he turned back to Scout, who was still shaking her head at his derangement. "Maybe the whales will appreciate my stand up more." He held his hand out to her. "Shall we?"

Wes wasn't a stand up comedian, and never had he claimed to be. But somehow, he always managed to make Scout laugh with his terrible jokes and his punny sense of humor. Maybe it wasn't the jokes as much as it was the person who made her laugh. Wes was a one of a kind best friend, and it made her glad he was her best friend. She watched as he leaned over to the little Penguin who didn't move for a moment. "I don't think that's what he wants." She assured him with a chuckle.

"Oh Goddess Wesley, don't--" Of course, it was worthless to tell him not to do it, because the first thing he would do was that exact same thing she had told him not to. And so the cheesy joke came forth and Scout laughed lightly, the Penguin not seeming as amused as he too disappeared down the tunnel and into the water. Wesley mentioned there being a tough crowd, and Scout patted his arm. "That or you offended her," She responded, shaking her head. "Maybe she's always wanted pockets. I'd also watch it when pissing off a female penguin." She added, crossing her arms.

"When their chicks die sometimes the females will go kidnap someone else's chick. Think about what else they can do, especially once you've pissed them off!" She said, throwing her arms into the air for a moment in mock concern before letting them drop with a dismissive hand gesture, "But I'm sure you'll be fine."

Wesley suggested the Whales, and Scout nodded and took his hand. "Of course, Sir." She answered with a sage nod as they started walking. Wesley mentioned them appreciating his comedy more, and Scout bit her lip. "Maybe," she answered as they made their way over. "Though I'd avoid the topic of standing up with the Whales, no legs." She said with a chuckle.

Scout mentioned their lack of limbs, and Wes just laughed. "Well good, it means they can't run away from my jokes. Unlike some people, erm, birds?", he said shooting a suspicious look back towards the penguins.

When the pair arrived at the final tank, Wesley's eyes grew wide with curiosity. This was the Aquariums main attraction. That's why it was always so busy, and that's why there was stadium like seating for watching the mini shows like feeding the sharks, and scuba facts. There was so much to see and do here. The whales, the sharks, and the massive sting rays and enormous fish all shared this gigantic exhibit. When the few spectators what were looming around departed, Wes pulled his friend to the front. From here he could see all the way into the far corner of the tank. The water was so clear and blue, but it was crowded with lively sea life.

"I could sit here all day." Wes admitted, his eyes were darting around to check out what was swimming just beyond the glass. He knew Scout could too, which is why they always saved the best for last.

The room was always full, but Scout always enjoyed it anyway. Wesley was always the one who would shoulder them to the front, and that's just what he did now. The whales were always a beautiful sight, the Orcas that swum around in the tank, coexisting with several other creatures, despite the fact that they were one of the Apex predators of the sea. It was all the creatures that never seemed to bother one another.

"Me too," Wesley didn't need that information, she already knew that he knew how much she enjoyed it, and she knew why he had been so eager to come with her to the Aquarium, and it had done exactly what she had intended it to do, it had made her forget just for a day about the current problem that was plaguing her with gusto. She suddenly wrapped her arms around Wesley, squeezing him tightly. "I love you, Wes." It was always good to be reminded in a world that could sometimes hurt you so terribly who loved you the most.

Wesley? He was one of those people.

He loved her too, but that went without saying. When she pulled him close, he let the side of his head come to rest at the top of her own. "I love you too, Scout." Finally something endearing, he was done telling jokes for now. His side hurt from laughing anyway, and his cheeks were sore from smiling.

The pair stood silently, gazing into the tank before them. It was a lovely way to end the day's adventure. There was always something humbling about watching the gigantic whales pass effortlessly through the water. It made his own problems feel so small. He hoped she was thinking that too, as her blue eyes trailed the orca until it retreated towards the back of the tank.
