OOC | This short interlude solo is to cover what Kyle has been up to during winter of year one, after separating from Celeste.
Celeste and her two sisters had gone home. It had been a long and emotional night. And quite frankly, more than Kyle should have shown to the two girls who were his students. An embarrassing moment that he doubted they would let him live down. After sending them off, he stood in front of the phone, looking at the image of his late wife and himself. A happy moment in time, saved in a picture which he still treasured. Taking off his ring, he placed it on a chain and hung it around his neck, under his shirt. He wouldn't forget her, but at this moment in time, he had to push through. Now that he was going to have children to another woman, it would be rude and disrespectful to drag his skeletons with him into the relationship.
Taking a few deeps breaths, he picked up the phone and dialed a number. It was one he hadn't called in quite some time. He kept in touch with letters about once or twice a season to keep them informed. The only times he would call is if something happened, or if there was something they wanted to discuss. Serious stuff, rather than personal. After all, both himself and the other party was busy most times of the days, making it hard to catch each other at the right time. Hearing the sound of the other end picking up, a nostalgic voice entered his ear.
｢Hello, this is the Schneider Residence. Who am I speaking to?｣
"... Hi, mom..."
｢Emmy? That you?｣
"Yeah... it's me..."
｢...? Are you alright?｣
"... I think I'm going to come home for a while. I need to talk with dad in person."
｢Sure, we'll get your room ready... Emmy- Kyle. Did something happen?｣
"... I guess you could say that? I'm... uhh..."
｢Well, don't keep me in suspense!｣
"I... have a child on the way..."
｢*thud* HONEY!!! EMMY KNOCKED A GIRL UP AND NEEDS OUR HELP!｣
This... is going to be a long trip...
Looking at the Japanese Mansion in front of him, Kyle inadvertently looked up at the three-story construction of nostalgic design. He had been gone for several years now, so seeing an entire city with this traditional design and aesthetics was a welcome sight for his weary eyes. Turning back, he looked at the front gate which was open, and the walls surrounding the property. Being an orphan in a city of people with primarily dark hair, he had always stood out. Well, it didn't matter much.
Standing at the front entrance to the mansion, Kyle gave the doorbell a ring as he waited. His parents were of high status here, so he could spot some men in suits here and there. There was one at the entrance who he remembered from back when he used to visit, so he was let in easily. His parents, although only by relation due to their daughter being his late wife, were easy-going and didn't like having a lot of people when it wasn't needed, but they did agree that some hired hands were needed for security reasons. That said, they were more like butlers, or attendants, who were well-versed in self-defense and protection.
As he heard a response from inside, he found himself suddenly tackled over as two weights pressed down on him from either side of his waist, both calling out his name.
Hearing those familiar voices, Kyle couldn't help but break out into a wide grin as he saw his little siblings. Looking at them as he embraced them, he noticed how they had grown. On the surface, they no longer looked so childish, and had become more mature. Though, that was ruined the moment they saw him and let loose their joy. But, he was glad they were doing well. Just as he was sitting on the doorstep and stroking their heads, the sliding door opened, and a stern womanly voice resounded as the two children were admonished for their actions.
｢Koraa!! You just get back from school and tackle your brother who is tired from his travels. Where's your manners, you two?!｣
While it wasn't a serious scolding, the two immediately stood up straight and at attention as they bowed lightly, speaking up without a hint of remorse in their voices.
｢Mou~ you two aren't sorry at all, are you? Anyway, you two go get changed and let your brother relax for a moment. I'll send someone to get you when it's time for dinner.｣
As the two ran off inside after changing their shoes out for their indoor slippers, Kyle stood up and brushed himself off, looking at the woman who was his mother-in-law. A woman in her forties, yet still looking so full of youth. With a small smile on his face, he straightened up and bowed to her slightly as he gave his greetings.
As he was about to stand up straight again, his mother, Arisa, gave him a long, tender hug as she welcomed back her son. Her son who, while not related by blood, and their connection via her daughter gone, she still accepted as family. Her son who had lost his way in life after losing his love, eventually distancing himself from them for several years. It was a long time to spend all alone. He had gotten taller than her over the years. Her head was now buried in his chest. She also noticed his hair hadn't been cut in quite some time. Evidence of his lack of a hard-working job, where in the past, he would cut his hair so it didn't get in the way. With some light sobs escaping her lips, she hugged him tighter.
｢Welcome home... my son...｣
｢I'm home... my mother...｣
Kyle sat on his knees on a cushion in the family living room, one one side of the table. In front of him sat his mother and father-in-law. His two siblings had already gone back to their room, as they had to get up early in the morning, and still weren't good with late nights. With the three of them there, they gave a slight bow and said their thanks as a maid in a type of samue placed green tea down on the table in front of each of them, before bowing and leaving the room with the tray she used to carry the drinks. As the three picked up their cups, they took a sip and let the warmth on such a cold night permeate their body. He had only just arrived today, and had yet to rest. But there were still discussions to be had.
Over the phone, Kyle had already told the basics of the story so they knew what had happened. The fact that he had been having a fake relationship with a woman. The fact that they started to grow close to each other, one way or another. And, the fact that he had gotten her pregnant. He said he wanted to speak about it in person. This is why he had yet to sleep. Because tomorrow, he knew it would be straight into business, first thing in the morning. Taking the time, Kyle began explaining to his parents about the situation and reason for coming back. That where he lived now, he was seen as a nobody. That his partner's family would be highly unlikely to accept their relationship because of his low standing. As a side note, he also added that the place he lived was going through hard times because of urbanization. And then, he concluded as to why he came back.
｢Father, I want you to train me to become a shrewd businessman. Induct me into the ways of aristocracy and high society. Not as Kyle Weisser... But as Emera Schneider. Your adopted son.｣
In an instant, the gentle expression his father had turned sharp. What Kyle had just said was a serious thing. In the past, Kyle had turned down the offer to succeed the business for him. While he was not bitter about it, it still raised questions as to why he suddenly wanted to now. Having heard the story of why he came back, he could fathom what his son-in-law was aiming for. Connections. Wealth. Business opportunities. Knowledge in the field, both practical and theory. He wanted to know how to live in such a rough world where his every action would be judged. Taking a sip, his father closed his eyes in thought for a while. Opening them again, he spoke up.
｢Three days. You have that long to memorize and predict the weather for the city with 80% accuracy, three days in advance. If you can't do it, then you aren't worth the time and should head back now.｣
｢Three days, is it?｣
They all knew how much of a prodigy Kyle was. Since he was a child, he put in a lot of effort to do what he wanted to do. A natural understanding of whatever it was, as well as talent in memorization. Basically, he could do whatever he wanted to do, as long as he took the time, which even then, would be a shorter amount of time then other people. It waqsn't so much knowledge that Kyle had, since he could get that from books. It was wisdom he excelled at. Insight. Experience. He did everything he could when he was little, and so he stood out a lot. But it had been a long time since he had pushed himself that far. That said, Kyle had a bit of a smirk on his face.
｢All these years, and you still underestimate me. Tomorrow night. I'll give you your predictions.｣
Several days later, Schneider Mansion...
｢Onii-chan, can you tell me more about her?｣
Sitting in Kyle's lap and being spoiled, Mei looked up at her older brother who had his attention on the books to the side of him. It was currently his relaxation time, but that didn't mean he was given a moment of break. Stock management, global economics, local economics, regional and biome-related farming, social and formal etiquette, music lessons, self-defense lessons, and finally, self-directed study. There was a lot he had to do, in order to prove himself as a man of repute at his age and in such short time. Normally, the child of the CEO would start showing up at parties and establishing connections from the age of 12. He was double that, plus one this year. Though, winter was coming to an end. His free time was now occupied with studying, even while entertaining his siblings and, while rude in most cases, studying during meals with his family. Turning his eyes to his little sister, Mei, Kyle gave a smile as he looked at her, recognizing that she was there, and giving her attention.
｢Sure. I believe I previously told you of our first encounter. So this time, how about I tell you more about Celeste as I see her.｣
Saying this, Kyle stroked Mei's hair slowly as she closed her eyes and leaned back into him. This had been something nostalgic for her, something Kyle had always done to relieve her worries when she was little. Today, she had been under a lot of stress, and was having trouble coping, and so she began to rely on her older brother again. Or rather, he noticed her hidden worries and called out to her, despite his busy schedule. Kyle, while his little sister indulged in his comfort, continued to talk of Celeste while reading the books on complex subjects beside him. All three books related to medical sciences. One of them being on pregnancy. Over the last several days of being 'home', he had gotten back into the habit of multitasking like this in order to optimize his time. With a bit of a 'hm~', he spoke about the one who had gotten so close to him over the last year.
｢As you know, onii-san doesn't interact with people that much anymore. I liked reading my books in silence. But. That person. Just that one. She made me glad to spend my time with another. Maybe even look forward to it. Oops, I'm digressing. I was going to talk about her. In any case, she is strong in character. Steadfast, headstrong, dominant. You could say she is like a a more charming, cool and beuatiful version of our father. She keeps a strong mask, just as strong as mine, you know? You've seen how my personality changes when I'm in front of the public, haven't you? It's like that. Don't tell her I said this, but I saw her soft side once. I think, she was even more caring and kind than myself, you know?｣
Alongside those, Kyle started to talk about various things. How they enjoyed their time together, simply relaxing. How he himself had opened up thanks to her. And also how he had embarrassingly started weeping in her arms out of happiness once, which he said would be their secret. Losing track of time, he noticed it was getting close to her bed time, and he had been talking a long time. Seeing that she had nodded off to sleep in his lap, Kyle gave a warm smile as he picked her up and carried her to her room.
While he was talking of Celeste, he couldn't help but think about her more and more. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, as the saying goes. While remembering her, he began to think about it. Just when had he gotten so far with her, that she lingered in his thoughts most of the day. When had he started to dedicate himself to her and their child. The memories of her announcement of pregnancy was definitely part of it, but it felt off. If anything, it only confirmed something that he had known since before then.
Laying Mei down in her futon, Kyle was about to stand up when he felt a tug on his yukata sleeve. Looking at her with a smile, Kyle waited for her since it seemed like she had something to say. With a sleepy voice, she spoke in a barely audible voice.
｢Onii-san... Onee-chan would be happy... I'm sure she'd be... happy for you... Bring Celeste-onee-chan back one day... okaaayyy...~?｣
With those words, Mei went back to sleep, curling up in her futon to stave off the cold. Kyle gave her a kiss on the forehead as he left with a soft smile on his lips.
｢I'm... sure she would. I'll bring Celeste over some day, when we're both ready.｣
With those words left unheard, Kyle went back to his room for some more studying.
After New Years...
｢Come back soon, you here? I've packed home made food for the trip back. It's a boring journey, isn't it?｣
｢I have my books, so I'll be fine, Okaa-san. Thank you for the food.｣
｢Hm... Maybe I should come with you and meet the one who broke that shell of yours, you unsociable-yet-undeniable-genius.｣
｢*THUD* Oh no you don't, dear. You have work to do.｣
On the doorstep of the Schneider Mansion, Kyle was saying his goodbyes to his in-laws. The people who were the only ones he could still call family, despite not being related by blood. Giving a light laugh at the common occurence of his father being struck over the back of the head by his mother, he looked next to his siblings. First, Hikaru. His little Brother.
｢I'll see you in several weeks, Aniki. Paul-- I mean, Tou-san's gotta do all that formal stuff.｣
｢Best get those joyful thoughts out of your mind, my son. I'm not sending you on vacation, I'm sending you for training as my successor.｣
｢Don't worry, I'll keep him on a tight leash once he arrives. I need someone to tend to my garden and wax the floors, after all. I'll be busy tending to an expecting-mother.｣
｢Geh. Maybe... I should come by when you aren't uhh... busy?｣
｢You are going regardless. And if I hear from your big brother that you misbehave, you'll be getting an earful, you hear?｣
｢Arisa Schneider. The woman whose motherly love can kill with a single phone call.｣
With Kyle getting whacked over the back of the head this time, he gave a little laugh as he gave his apologies. Finally, he turned to Mei.
｢I'll be coming by as well sometime, so at that time, please treat me well. That is, if we pass father's test.｣
｢That's true~. I'm probably the only one who ever passed his strict tests which were meant to be failed.｣
｢Honestly, this man... Such a baby. Crying and complaining to me that night because he was out-done by a child yet to have his first kiss.｣
｢O-oi! Why did you have to say that! Kuh! My reputation is tarnished...!｣
With the family laughing once more, Kyle gave a deep bow of gratitude for them having him there for such a time period, and catering to his selfish wishes. Leaving through the gate, he refused to turn back as he thought ahead to what was to come. First was getting back to Ioana Valley. After that, was checking in with Celeste, and see how she was doing. If she hated him for disappearing. If she had gone through hardships because of it. If she resented him, blamed him for everything. He hoped not. He hoped they were still on good terms. He hoped things had been good for her. He hoped he had proven himself well after gaining enough credentials as "Emera Schneider", Son of the CEO of Schneider I&ES (Import and Export Shipping) Company, a company well recognized in high society for their goods and deeds. He hoped... that he could get back even a second faster, and see Celeste.
After all, he had already confirmed his feelings...
... He had already fallen in love with her.
