Sure, it was Harmony Day. But she hadn't really focused on it since high school anyway. Sure, there were some people who had gone on blind dates, set up by that gossip monger and her crew, but it was one of the few days Emily decided to close the store to spend with her kids. Though at the moment, the twins were playing at the edge of the water with the family dog, Sparky, while she watched from further up the beach. She had spread a blanket out with what could only be a picnic lunch. Sure, romance was supposed to be the focus of Harmony Day, but she also wanted to spend time with her little loved ones. And she'd heard the twins giggling in the kitchen that morning, so she could only expect a surprise from them.

If Derek hadn't left, would she be sitting here with him, or would things have been even more complicated? At least him running off meant she hadn't had to spend money on a lawyer for custody battles. Ten years, he'd been gone, and though being a single mother of twins was a little hectic at times, she liked her life just the way it was. Though it'd be nice to have a few other hands at the store so she could take an extra day off to spend with her kids.

"Mama, come paly with us!" Kurt called, waving at her. Sparky barked once, a low, deep bark that carried pretty far. Emily laughed and stood.

"What should we play?" she asked.

"Did you bring the Frisbee mama?" Kaylee asked. Instead of answering, Emily reached down and pulled one out of the tote bag she'd brought, then gave it a good toss in the direction of her kids. It ended up going a bit too far to the right, after getting caught by the wind, and Sparky ran after it. One good leap, and the Australian Shepherd caught it in his mouth, proudly bringing it back to the twins. The two of them laughed, and then Kurt took it and tossed it. And so the game of Frisbee began.

A few rounds later, one good toss from Kurt sent it straight over Emily's head, toward an unsuspecting, albeit familiar, figure. "Heads up!" she yelled toward them, hoping they would turn around soon enough to at least dodge the plastic disk flying through the air at them.

Harmony Day had finally arrived and Henry had to admit that he was a little nervous about it. He'd signed up to mostly get himself out of the house and hopefully meet some new people, but if he were being completely honest to himself, he was hoping to meet someone. His life had been a mess lately, and he wanted to get that sorted out before he brought any new relationship into his life, but he'd been lonely. He'd never had much luck with girls and so, here he was, approaching 30 withoutout ever having been in a serious relationship.

He tried to make the most of it in his younger years, focusing on himself and his own desires, but now he was getting older. He was almost frightened at the possibility that he would grow old alone. He wasn't one for believing in fate, so instead he'd left it up to Aunt Bessy to find someone. At the very least, he'd get some kind of treat out of it since he was going to Crumbly Delights.

Before the dates began, though, he decided to take a walk on the beach to clear his thoughts. He preferred the beach much more in the summer, when he could strip down to swimming trunks and soak up the sun and the surf, but he'd grown tired of walks in the woods. He needed a change of scenery, even if it was still local. He pulled on some tattered pants and a long sleeve shirt and headed out.

He let his mind wander as he walked along the beach, carrying his boots in hand. He was thinking about what his future might hold when he heard a woman's voice shout. He ducked down, dropping his boots, just as a frisbee flew right where his head had been. He turned around, squinting slightly as he looked for the culprit. Standing there was Emily and her small family. He broke into a grin when he saw them and gave a wave as he bent down to pick up his boots. "Hey, watch it! Ya nearly took my head off!" he called out with a laugh.

"Sorry Mr. Cooper!" Kurt yelled, waving. "Throw it back mom!" He had grown past calling her mama when there were other people around. Just one more reminder that her twins were growing up a bit too fast.

"Sorry about that, Henry," Emily said, jogging past him to where the Frisbee had landed in the sand. She gave it a good toss back toward her twins before walking to her friend's side. "I'm usually a better catch than that." She glanced at him, a sheepish smile on her lips. She had always been a rather sporty person, so her missing a catch was usually pretty rare.

Instead of rejoining the game, she stayed next to Henry. "What are you doing out here all alone on a day like this?" she teased. Sure, she was out here on Harmony Day, but she also had only the one day each week to spend with her kids. "Well, since you're here, how about joining us for lunch? I made plenty." She nodded toward the blanket, held in place by the two bags she'd brought. She'd packed several different things, from sandwiches and rice balls to fresh strawberries and even a salad that she'd made more for herself than for her kids. She'd mixed in some fresh lettuce with turnips and other greens and herbs, topped with just a little bit of shredded cheese. And, of course, plenty of water, as well as some plates and flatware.

She made her way back toward the blanket and got to her knees before unpacking the things she'd brought. "They'll spend a while longer playing before they're ready to eat," she said, meaning her twins. "Please, help yourself. It's all local." She stopped herself there, to keep from going on about what they had. Henry already knew it, after all, though maybe not as well as she did. Sure, cafes and bars got all the gossip, but it was the grocery store that knew where the real treasures hid.

”Don’t worry about it, Kurt!” Henry replied to the boy as he stepped back, allowing Emily more room to pass by as she hurried after the Frisbee. He’d been hurt by worse than a plastic disc, as evidenced by the scar on his brow. Plus, in his experience, they seemed to have a mind of his own. Or maybe he was just terrible at throwing them.

He grinned and shook his head as Emily apologized. ”Nothing to apologize for. I’m sure a stray wind off the ocean took control of it,” he said with a wink. He offered the excuse up to cover for her miss.

”Oh, you know, just waiting to get hit by stray Frisbees,” he replied to her teasing. ”Looks like I decided to come to the beach at just the right time.” He thought for a moment about turning down lunch. He was a little nervous about his date tonight, but his hunger outmatched the butterflies in his stomach. ”Sure, sounds good! Thanks!” He followed her to the blanket, setting his boots down on the sand next to the blanket before plopping down unceremoniously next to her and crossing his legs.

Henry nodded, looking through the food for a moment before deciding on a rice ball. He held it while he waited for Emily to decide what she was going to eat and decided to answer her seriously. ”Really, though, I’m just out here looking to clear my head a little before the Harmony Day dates tonight. I’m feeling a little nervous about it.” He blushed a little at admitting it. He hadn’t really been on the dating scene.... well, ever. He was approaching 30 fast, and he felt like a big part of his life was passing him by. He didn’t know if a blind date set up by Aunty Bessy would provide him an opportunity to turn that around or not, but he was willing to give it a chance.

He hunched over a little, looking out at Kurt and Kaylee as they played. He wondered what it would be like to be a father and made a silent promise to himself to be a better one than his father had been. ”Anyway,” he said, turning back to Emily, ”How have you been enjoying the beach? I imagine it’s been pretty quiet.”
